Anybody race karts?
Well, I started autoxing this season, and now I am hooked. :D So naturally I want to get involved in some kind of racing. From what I see, karting would be a blast. My question is what kind of $ am I looking at spending here. ( a competitive(sp) kart, entrance fees, gear...yada yada) I am a newb when it comes to this type of racing, but it looks like the most bang for your buck out there. Also, can big guys fit? I am 6'5" and ALL legs. I know the more $ you have the better stuff you will get, but I am just wondering what it would take to put a decent kart out there.

my buddies at work are trying to get me to go with them on Monday's to this place called GoKart Racer. They supply the karts. Just bring some cash. You pay $50 for a 5 minute qualifier heat. don't worry, everyone qualifies. This is just to establish grid position for the main.
Then the main is a 25 minute race. I haven't been yet, but supposedly it's a good time. Check out this link below that shows the carts. 9hp honda engines that make these babies go up to 35mph...too bad they didn't have a renesis powrered Kart.

oh yeah, I have a buddy who's 6' 4" and he says he fits fine in the Kart.

blksf8,
You better go:D That sounds like a blast. 35mph doesnt sound like too much, but when you are 1/2 of an inch off the ground, I am sure it feels plenty fast. Thats good news that your friend can fit, so there is hope for me.

Thanks Ike, I am going to look into getting a 100cc kart (sprint kart?) and see what that is all about. Also, on the shifter karts, do they have a paddle gear selector, or something else?

I'm basically in the same situation you are... ever since I got this car I've started getting into racing (autoX, karting, etc). My friends and I are thinking of getting our own karts but I haven't really researched it much yet.

Mp5,
Thanks for the info. Those shifter karts look mean. It would be a blast to bang through the gears in one of those things F1 style. Karting seems to be the best bang for your buck in that you get lots of wheel to wheel experience for a low price (compared to other forms of racing). I am probably going to get a sprint kart in month or two and start on that. If everything goes well in the sprint kart, I hope to move into a shifter kart.

Shifter karts can turn faster laps at racetracks than the fastest, best handling roadgoing cars in the world, depending on the CCs of the kart of course. At an autox 125cc shifter karts are the fastest things out there by a pretty wide margin usually.
