225 or 245, best for stock 8" wheel?

Quick question if I may.

Dont compete with this car, so the answer is not really critical. Plan to autocross for fun, maybe HPDE if my schedule will allow.

From what I know you want the tire width to be even with the wheel width. Most cars that have 245 tires mount them on 8.5' or wider wheels. Is the "extra" grip afforded the 245 versus the stock 225 offset somewhat by the narrower tire to wheel ratio? Or would I or anyone even notice the difference. I like the tight feel the car has an if a too wide a tire (per wheel width) is used it will cause the car to feel mushy with steering inputs.

I know, a 275/35R18 on a 10" wheel would be great, but just curious what would work best with the stock wheel.

Thanks

245 is the widest you can go on stock wheels.

But it really depends on what tires you are planning on running and at what pressures. As far as mushyness.

generally I will recommend a 235 on stock wheels, The 245s felt too loose for my tastes for the setup that I run.

From what you say you know the answer. Still, 'better' and 'best' is a fuzzy science here with a lot depending on the tire and a lot of combos work with + and - attributes for each.

spend some time on tirerack.com it is a bit tire dependent... you can look at a tire size and it will give you a recommended wheel width...

i am running 245 / 40/ 18 on lightweight 7.5 inch width wheel.. works just fine..

I loved the 245 set up.

I went back to 225 because the diameter is smaller. I don't like it. It's more stable with the 245's.

I went to 225's to see if I can drive on the street since they are .8" lower.

If it works they I go to 17" wheels. So far I can get around but never over any speed bumps.

am a bit confused..

as talked about..

225 / 45 18 is 25.9 in dia.
245 / 40 18 is 25.8 in dia.

these sizes are what people do on a stock wheel.. as the dia controls the speedo error..

what aspect ration are you running??

beers

245/40 18s for the last two sets of tires for me. No rubs, no problems. Just ordered a third set of the same size.

Kuhmo Ecsta MX 245/40 18s are what I've run the last two sets. Very good grip in the summer. Much less expensive than most. Better than the stock Potenzas. Think I paid about $150 each last time. Decent mileage for a summer tire at around 30k. They take a long time to warm up when it's cold out and forget about snow.
My wife's MS6 has Pirelli PZero Nero MS that give a nice smooth ride and decent grip for a MS. This is a great all season tire at about $168 per tire.

The 225/45-18 Bridgestone Pole Position S03 is on a closeout sale at Tirerack for $125 each, that;s quite a decent street tire wet or dry for the price

Thanks for the headsup. Been looking for tires with a similar treadwear as my old Ventus RS-2s (because no one ******* sells them in my sizes... ). $125 for tires that usually cost $200+ is REALLY cheap.

Umm...RS2 Z212s are available in 235/40R-18 at edgeracing.

MANY tires are available in a 235/40R-18. You can also fit 245 width tires as well.

If you want an affordable tire with great track grip for next to nothing then try the Fusizon ZRi. Tire rack sells them.
The tires look pretty nice too.

Depends upon how you drive.

For handling:

225's for nimble

245's for high speed manuvers

I really like the 245/40/18 GS-D3s I put on my stock wheels. They look good and handle fantastically.

For racing, you want a 225 on a 8.5 - 9.0 wheel. This is to minimize the side wall flex. This would be for a Hoosier or Hankook or Toyo race compound tires.

9" works with 245 nicely too.

Get the 245's as your grip increased quite a bit. Mount them on 9's if you can. 8.5 would work but 9's is best.
