1997-2001 Prelude vs RX8
1997-2001 Prelude vs RX8
So I own a prelude SH and I am very curious. I am on the RX8's side. Will the RX8 take the prelude in a straight line? The stats look like its true. But what about in the corners? I would agree so too! A lot of people at preludepower think an RX8 isnt any better than a lude. I told them anyways all I am lookin for is a Prelude thats RWD. The RX8 is kinda a good substitute. What do you guys think?
No. RX-8 would win stock vs stock. Research the specs and then compare. Good luck finding a RWD Prelude.

well even though i hate bench racing...the RX8 should win off of simple stats alone
a bit more power, about equal weights, and rwd so in a straight line it should win
isnt there a video on youtube of a 'lude and a black 8??

as for performance wise i think the 8 should take it based off numbers and i really think that once you get to a real track the 8 should do a lot better, but what do i know
i went over and looked at that thread. there is some mis-information over there like the rebuild at 80,000k miles, you already know that they go past that. also the redline is 9000 for the MT on all models. check the oil every fill up or so, you may have to top it off some between oil changes as it burns some by design. hp is generally dynoed at ~180whp. just a couple things i saw that i thought i should address.

I have to admit......I had a poor impression of the rx8 before I drove one.....and found that it can hold its own, and on the track it kicks ***. There is a lot of bad press going around about the rx8 still......kinda like ford...once you get a poor rep its really hard to shake it.
hey it happens on all car forums, people assume about other cars some true some not, like how the 8 has little power down low. that is true, the 8 will never be a dragster but it is a great car for autocrossing and enjoying a nice windy road.
Yeah but it just annoys me so much when people are stupid. Thats basically how my Prelude SH is. Low rev=low power. Thats why I said the RX8 is sorta like a new Prelude with RWD.

And I've been on track with a Prelude SH. He was behind me and when we both hit the straigth I pulled a few car lengths of space between us. I assume we both had the cars at WOT and it appeared we both just had exhausts. I won't comment on the corners or braking because it would be pointless as our driving experience wasn't the same.
I owned a '98 Prelude several years ago. The 5th gen Preludes were good cars for their time, but they can't hold a candle to an RX-8 as a driver's car.
The RX-8 is a significantly lighter car. My '98 Prelude weighed in at ~3050 pounds in near stock trim at the '00 SCCA Fort Worth National Tour. By contrast, my B Stock '04 RX-8 weighed just over 2800 pounds at the '06 Houston Tour. The RX-8 also has better power, larger contact patches at all four corners, better suspension geometry, better polar moment of inertia (front-mid engine versus H22a hung way out in front of the front axle centerline), a better driveline, a real differential, and vastly better weight distribution.
About the only place where the Prelude beats the RX-8 is at the pump, and not by much. I average 16-17mpg in my RX-8, where I averaged 18-19 mpg in my Prelude. VTEC is thirsty.

What kinda times do bone-stock 5th gen Preludes turn in the 1/4 mile (on street tires)?
I think most mags get around 14.5-14.8 in 6MT RX-8's, while some good drivers seem to be able to turn low 14's with them (~14.2-14.3).

I've also owned both, and there really is no comparison. The Prelude was a great car though, and it is a credit to that car that people would even compare the two. The VTEC engine was sweet. But the RX-8 is faster, and handles better (quite noticeably). Plus the rotary engine can be compared to no other.
I owned a 2000 Prelude SH before I traded it in for the RX-8. It was a great car and it saw plenty of autocrosses and track days. In a straight line it's a low 15 sec car in the 1/4 mile.
Hands down the RX-8 is more fun to drive on the street, autocross course, or track. Both cars are similar in weight, but the RX-8 has several things going for it. The biggest is rear-wheel drive. Plus the brakes are much larger on the 8. Mazda was pretty generous with brake size for a 3000lb car. I used aggressive race pads on the track and they would only last a couple of track days. The 8 is much better in this regard.
The Prelude was fun on the track and mine had pretty good turn-in, but the RX-8 is even better. It just eats up the corners like a Sumo wrestler at a buffet. The SH was a nice trick to compensate for FWD, but it still can't turn in as nicely as the RWD RX-8. The weight balance of the 8 is also what gives it the ability to rotate so well. The Prelude is more nose heavy than the 8 and you can tell the difference around the track. I am faster around the track in my RX-8 then I was in my Prelude.
No negative comments for the Prelude though. The eight is pretty similar in functionality and performance, but just better.

Wow. I had no idea how many people graduated from a Prelude to an RX-8! I had a 98 SH (bought with 30k miles in 2000.) I loved that car, but the others are right; the 8 is in a totally different class. As for the reliability, my Prelude had the top half of the engine rebuilt TWICE from 30k-100k miles (I'm not saying this is typical, just my experience.) My 8 has been virtually flawless through it's first 65K. Gas mileage was about 22 mpg mixed in the lude, and I get about 18-20 mixed in the 8. They both drink premium fuel. The Lude also has a tendency to burn oil (due to carbon fiber cylinder liners?) I used a quart between oil changes. So, both are cool cars; but I like the RX-8 much better.
Wow I wake up and I get a lot of previous prelude owners chiming in! Very nice! I love my prelude and I have been looking for a substitute. I was looking at the S2000 but only 2 seats I dont really like that. Plus insurance is a butt load on them! RX8 is going to be my next car. Anyways thanks guys for chiming in from both owners.
Oh yeah, be prepared for the sucky gas mileage if fuel costs is an issue for you. I get 18 city/21-23 highway in the 8 while I was getting 22 city/ 27-29 highway in the Prelude. Both had similar sized fuel tanks so you do the math
I live close to work so it's no big deal for me.

So the RX8 beats the lude in every aspect besides gas mileage? I think it'll get the same as mine because my lude is not so great on gas. A trip to nevada I topped the tank off and I only got 310 all highway miles. Thats 16 gallons!
Mean while, in the nether world of www.WeLovePrelude.com....
"Hey this is me passing the slow *** RX-8 from the inside line. I even gave him a little wave as my VTEC cam came online. See ya rotard!"
