Which one is the HVAC control head unit? Is this the one that has buttons?

All you need to do is remove the old one and resolder the joints, and it will work perfectly. It's a common problem on rx8s as well as many mazda products. I had to fix mine a couple years ago, it's worked like new since.

IF someone is too afraid to do this, I am willing to help out if you want to send it to me as I've got some experience with repairing electronics from all those years with the rx7s. And again I've done my own successfully. It's not too hard to get it out, but you do have to pull the whole dash faceplate with head unit.
