So basically a new height sensor from mazda runs roughly around $400. While I worked at Lexus, I discovered our height sensor and some of the Lexus ones were the exact same sensor. When any sensor would go bad I'd take them and salvage what i could from them. In turn I made some practically brand new sensors.
Basically all you have to do is remove your old sensor, and remove the sensor itself from the mounting brackets and connecting arm, and install these sensors.
Why do the sensors go bad?
My thought is that it's a simple engineering flaw. A lot of the sensors were oriented in the direction allowing water to seep past the weather proof connections. I found corrosion in multiple areas but the main cause of sensor failure was either broken off arms, or corrosion would build up underneath the springs and eventually open circuit or intermittently cause very high resistance.
Why do I need the sensors? They only control the headlights right?
Wrong. If your car is equipped with DSC(Dynamic stability control) a bad sensor would give the system false information. These sensors monitor suspension load (along with wheel speed sensors, accelerometers, etc) to determine when to activate ABS and control steering angle. Thus why two sensors are utilized unlike single sensor systems designated for auto-leveling headlight operation only.
Alternatively if your sensors are not that badly corroded you can send them to me and I can recondition them.
Sensor seats fully cleaned and inspected for deep pitting.
Springs and seal installed with an anti-corrosion coating. (Applied to underside of springs)
Contact grid/ back panel cleaned and anti-corrosion coating applied.
Connector face with anti-corrosion coating applied to pins. (another fairly common failure point)
Fully assembled.
New connecting arm nut with anti-corrosion coating applied to threads.
Alternatively your can attempt to DIY here.
