And which one did you have?
The OP hasn't even said which one he is thinking about importing to my knowledge, yet everyone has opinions and wants pictures.
FYI.........the particular one I have and has been stated in another thread has been in for about a year now and no issues.

Where did you get yours? This is the first I've heard of them being this prone to failure...

Didn't want to jack your thread.
Got mine from http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...000-1151625285 but didn't pay as much as they are presently going for. Got the solid black leather one with white stitching and bought the matching leather parking brake at the same time.
If you click on the picture on the site above, you can get a better picture of what this particular one looks like.

Oh.............You are also right about the boot with the snap on it, and I'm pretty sure mine came with that boot.

In terms of the wires being small and brittle, I think that was an early design flaw, and not even sure it was ever an issue on this particular one........I'd have to search and see, but mine was no issue, but of course I was careful on the install.....you can jack it up anything if you aren't careful or abuse it.

If you happen to want chaparral brown(that's all Trussville has)....then...........http://www.buymazdaparts.com/parts.c...e=rx8&catid=18

I know......I didn't pay anywhere near $300.00, I had an inside line and was hand carried back here to me.

When/if you get a quality one at less than $200.00 it will stand out really well against this $300.00 one, plus you have to pay shipping from Japan on the one I showed above!

^leave your post. I'm not in the business of hiding information from anyone. BTW if someone knows a cheaper source please feel free to post that too... If I go out of pocket and buy up like 10 of these I don't want to get stuck with 10 shift ***** after someone finds a cheaper source...

I can post some pics of mine if people would like to see what they look like. The one I got has not had any issues and the wires are def long enough not to pull when shifting. The only complain I have is thats its alittle bright against the rest of the dash. Was thinking of wiring an extra resistence to dim it alittle. Otherwise I am very happy with it, looks nice!

I'll try to do the same this weekend and take a pic or two.
Again, it is a little bit bright, but there are a few ways to tone it down...and you mentioned one of them.

Thought I'd throw my 2 cents in

They are really expensive, I totally agree.

They look awesome...the bezel is a high quality chrome and not painted silver like the stock ones. It looks stunning in the dark.

The new ones are problem free in regards to constant lighting and the wire issue. New ones as in the past 6 months or so. Be warned though that some jackass got a hold of all of the crap ones and started selling them on ebay and just about everywhere but inside Japan. He even tried selling to them one of my distributors...which they noticed in a heartbeat.

If I find an insane deal on these I'll contact Cnmn...if he finds an insane deal and they are the good ones, buy it...the price I doubt will go down in the future, only up.

Sorry guys, gonna have to call this off for now... The price direct from Mazda was 23100Y which is around $215 bucks.. I had been hoping that there would be a similar price difference as with clear corners (new from Mazda they's 45 bucks, but most online stores in the states sell them for 70+)..

Thanks for the interest, and sorry I couldn't make this happen.

Flexible stranded wire that is far more durable given the location...the old one had thicker copper wire that was brittle.

Just to make people jealous

As an aside, I heard an interesting thing about these shift ***** (note I wasn't talking to the parts guy directly). He said that these are now discontinued due to customer complaints and he could only order them out of existing inventory. Wasn't aware of any revised part either. Hmm... The one I got seemed to have the thick copper wire that truemagellen was talking about.

Anyway, I have mine and it looks hot. If they are indeed discontinued, people that have been hesitating might want to consider pulling the trigger or else..

The last time I checked a month or so ago they were still available with the new design.

Does yours have a chrome bezel, painted silver, or brushed silver look? I can't tell from the lighting.

If you have the thick wire model take it off right now...and solder on a stranded flexible wire...then it shouldn't break. In fact I received a batch of these somehow I'd personally modify them myself before selling them so people won't have the hassels.

Use 60watt solder or my favorite a butane model and adjust the temp so you really make a strong (not cold) connection. THen I believe it will last a long time.

how come yours is not chrome?????????

yes these are very easy to break, i don't know why but it just won't last no matter how careful you shift or install, I've had 4 like i said the one that I'm having on my car now won't light up after 2 month, and that's a years ago. I got all from Trussivlle, I've heard someone on the board know the trick to make these last long.

Yeah, mine is chrome also. That one looks like brushed aluminum or even dare I say......plastic? Maybe it's just the lighting? I had issues with mine, but interestingly it wasn't up in the **** area, it was down by the connector but all is good now and no issues in just about two years or so.
