Clutch Bracket Brace

Started to hear the clutch pedal squeaking, and i saw the weld joints. Most of us can't afford to be stranded with a broken clutch pedal so i took some precautions and ordered a support bracket. I believe its from Rotary FX.... For $60+Shipping, worth the insurance! :)

Overall quality(7/10): Holes weren't properly aligned
Shipping(10/10): Super Quick
Install Guide(9/10): I thought it was easy but for the less than average DIY, some more pics would be needed.

Spring Install 2

So after a long and knuckle shattering day, installed ignition kit from bennetbuilt and SOHN adaptor. A misfire came about when i had to move my car, what better time! The Coils and wires were pretty much new, done at 101,500 miles and uninstalled at 102,029mi. So aprox. 530 miles. Hopefully i can sell for a decent price! Sadly i didn't do a DIY like planned because few minutes in my hands were filthy and didn't want to get my phone all dirty. None the less there are plenty of them and all i can say, Just follow those damn instructions and TAKE YOUR TIME. It took me from 2pm to about 8pm.... steady work a couple little breaks! Also its good to do a NVRAM reset after all this is installed..... i had idling issues and kept dying... still do but it doesn't die, wants to but hasn't yet! For the SOHN I'm using Motul 710 mainly because I've always preferred Motul fluids.

Yeah its going on 4 years plasti-dipped, originally velocity red :) I plan on peeling it off possibly and maybe getting it wrapped but i need a new motor more than anything!

mazdaverx7 03-20-2015 01:13 PM

Is the compression low on one or both rotors or is the engine consuming coolant?

xKp5609x 03-20-2015 08:14 PM

No coolant consumption I'm aware of, no heavy smoke or sweet smell or rust in rotor housings. (Checked when i did my ignition with a small camera)

Im ASSUMING compression lost seeing as its a raman since 16,800 miles and now I'm at 102,048miles and the last owner was a dipshit. But i don't wanna pay $468 for a damn compression test when i can get my own tester for $350.... so i plan on finding a decent rebuilt or even good used motor for time being. Cold starts fine, runs and idles fine now. no power loss felt, or hesitation. Hot start..... won't start to save its life lol.

Center Console Tear Down and Cleaning DIY

So today I decided it was time to take out the center console and clean it. The previous owner had spilled coffee ALL OVER the entire Center Console. It Smelled awful and everything was sticky so I decided to spend an afternoon cleaning up the surfaces. After doing a surface cleaning, and waiting a week or so, the coffee smell came back and it was evident that I would need to either pay $300+ for a Detailing company to clean it, or just spend a day or two and do it myself. Since I saw that as a waste of money I decided it'd be a fun little project for me to do. Here I will tear down the center console already out of the car. There is a DIY already out there showing how to take it out of the car, It's approx. 10 Philip screws and some finagling to take her out.

NOTE: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR RX-8. THIS IS JUST A GUIDE TO AID OTHERS IN A DISASSEMBLY OF THE WHOLE RX-8 CENTER CONSOLE.

Step 1: Make sure everything is removed from the cubby's of the center console as we will be flipping around quite a bit.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...ae6851c00c.jpg

Step 2: Remove the black trim where the ashtray mounts to. There are two screws on each side for a total of (4). Be careful, DO NOT pull apart too hard!

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...a368d4e05f.jpg

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...6a3fd0184b.jpg

Step 3: Once it's off, turn it upside down. There will be 3 White clips on each side of the front Center Console. Carefully undo theses tabs, a total of (6)

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...8ea6653a74.jpg

Step 4: There are two more hidden screws under the insulation. They're marked in green. Undo these and then carefully take apart the front half of the Center Console. It should now look like this. The Rear assembly is shown here:

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...0408e7a215.jpg

Step 5: So first, I grabbed a bucket with very HOT water and some soap. I soaked one half at a time to loosen the coffee! Best way, coffee turns to a solid rock if there's sugar in there, which there was :/

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...a1165a346f.jpg

Step 6: Now go to the rear Center Console assembly and there should be (4) more screws under there, holding the silver trim pieces on there, undo the screws and then the pieces will come right off. Sorry for no pics, but that’s about it in taking apart the center console to clean!
Here are some pictures before:

Final Results: A nice MUCH CLEANER almost perfect center console :) & Much happier REX Owner!

SO MUCH cleaner

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...a4c0e28ccb.jpg

Bonus: I've Notice a lot of people with uneven center console buttons, and they just replace them! Instead, there's a quick little solution!

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...d846e17d2e.jpg

Step 1: On the underside on the center console, unscrew the (2) Phillips head screws. Then push the button in and out. NOTICE: there are two black tabs that hinge on the assembly. For me, one side was gabbing the other side was pushed in. All I did was take a screw driver and pop it out a little, but be carful this tab can break if done in extreme cold or too much force!

Look at the black tab where the spring is

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...e29566edc7.jpg

Step 2: Enjoy you new even button! Hopefully it lasts or another solution will be made :)

Nice and Even, Yes its 100% functional again :)

xKp5609x 03-24-2015 08:14 PM

I am planning on designing and under tray similar to that of GTSPEC just cheaper. Seeing and i need to rebuild my motor, i hope this will help fund my expenses while also offering a quality and cheaper solution :) Will build soon and test it all out! If anyone is interested just PM me.

03/27/15- Spring First Drive

So it was a rather warm day and roads clear enough to take REXIE out for a spin, So i took her about 20 miles to make sure SOHN and LS2 Coils with my own tune via Cobb AP worked all together. Everything went well, in the 20 miles drive (half city/half highway) of high load and revs, i consumed about 200+ ml of oil via SOHN and no leaks! and no misfires even cruising in the 7k+ RPM for couple miles! All is well... So i thought  Then, on my way home to park her, she died upon idle..... i guess compression was lower that i thought! Had waited aprox. 45 min, with hood open to barely get her to turn on and took some back roads home! Need a new engine sooner than i thought :icon_no2:

I never understood people who don't take care of their cars. It is one of biggest purchases you make in life and they just treat them like crap. I have an '05 Xterra that I use for everything from camping to hauling landscaping as well as my DD and its paint and interior are flawless. Yes it gets dirty, but actually washing and waxing and cleaning the interior I am glad you are returning this nice car back to being nice again.

I don't know why I haven't seen this thread yet. Good looking start! A matte black car seems like the worst type of hell, but it looks alright.

A few comments/questions:
I see you went with the bennett built ignition! How do you like it? I run their wires with my D585s, but I always thought that the placement of their kit was far superior to BHR and the others. Great guy to work with.

That center console was nasty.

Why are you making (is it done?) a new under tray? Those bottom vents aren't really for cooling, they're to prevent too much pressure from flexing and breaking the tray at high speeds.

Have you considered screens in front of your oil coolers? That could get ugly really fast on older roads.

•I love the BB Ignition, his customer service was second to none, the kit installed rather easily, only had issue gettin wires on bottom coils because my hands arent small lol. Too many people try to copy this, but the bracket shows my money was well spent. VERY HAPPY!

•Center console was actually washed twice, coffee and tobacco everywhere 😷. Now smells like laundry lol, cleaned up all the coffee from the car, now cleaning rear seats and car.

•started to make undertray, little delayed due to school. But i have 1mm solid piece of 6061Al and i was testing some nuts and bolts vs weather. Left outside for about 28 days. Temps range from 22f-70f, rain and direct sunlight, bolts, nuts and panel, look brand new.... So i plan on cutting to spec by beginning of may. And im only planning on doing about 3 relief vents on the rear, still undecided. Using solidworks to analyze some air flow patterns and pressures. Still in the works.

•I do plan on getting some good quality black mesh for the oil coolers. They are in good condition, gonna straighten out some fins. Check lines aswell.

Stay tuned. Once i find a good motor at a price i can afford. Will be swapping out, and tearing down my current one which is a mazda reman. It recently devloped HEAVY white smoke under cold starts only, feel like it may be bad coolant seals. Not 100% sure. I plan on buying my own compression tester, to test yearly! :)

BS. I have had a SOHN for years and my consumption rate has been the same as it was before I had it (1-1.5 quarts per 2000 miles depending on my driving style). Now I have my rates turned up VIA the Cobb so I use more but either way the SOHN doesn't affect the consumption rate.

This was before i truly learned about positive displacement pumps, only reason i don't delete it is because i want to show people what i previously thought and why what i thought is wrong. Anyone interested can PM for a .pdf on positive displacement pumps. I JUST WANT A NEW ENGINE :crying: :crying:

Axial Flow Short Shifter & RaceRoots Synchro Saver

1 Attachment(s)
So today I decided to install my AFE SS and Synchro Saver. Since my car does not currently run, I cannot give you and honest opinion on how it drives, feels or any issues I have with it. As for install, took about an hour. The install is EXTREMELY straight forward, almost easier than an oil change! :mdrmed:The hardest part, Adjustment... The top plate of the Synchro Saver installed straight forward. Made sure the shifter was in first, with the bolts loose, made sure the metal plate literally kissed the shift lever as to make sure the shifter went no further after install but didn't impede its path causing it to pop out and not go in. Before Locking it fully in place, i went into 3rd and 5th VERY GENTLY as to not knock it out of alignment, made sure they kissed the shifter as well and then cranked them down. Now the pain began. Getting 2/4/6 to get aligned properly. When the plate was aligned, with the bottom left bolt threaded, the right bolt WOULD NOT go in properly. So after having the two bolts installed, i tried to force the plate up to kiss the shifter, and I think i got it. Definitely will go back and re align the bottom because i feel there is literally half a mil. of play and that is a no go!!! Also, kept BOTH boots, yes it a lot of force and muscling but the boot went right over and around the SS and filled the gap!

Here it installed: (Using Screwdrivers for leverage made this a one minute job, just be careful not to tear the rubber boot!)

Just ordered MT90 for the transmission and some 75W-90 gear oil for the diff!! Also a stainless steel clutch line. I figure, while the engine is out, it would be easy for the shop to install it in the process!

COBB Accessport V2 Issues

1 Attachment(s)
So earlier this year when i went to turn on the car and move it, i decided to hook my AP up for Sh*** & Giggles, well... it didn't load. After searching online to see what the subie guys had to say as the V2 is/was widely used to tune them. End result, Send it back to COBB and let them reprogram it. Lost all my tunes, not a big deal because they were just fan temps and OMP etc. But if anyone can answer, What tune will go on when/if I un-marry the AP? Anyways, this time i stored it in my room instead of the basement, figured the temp. or humidity got to it. So today i decide to load it up and see what tunes are on it etc... same issues. So called them back up, they said they never heard of a repaired unit coming back even for a reset. So I opened up a ticket and plan on sending it back. But i did receive an interesting email from Adam on the COBB Support team. Unfortunately i have to pay up for repair.... once again:banghead:. Thinking i should have just gotten Mazdaedit!

Adam from COBB:

Overall glad they're willing to work with me, but seeing as the unit is defective, feel like i should not have to pay, but complaining isn't going to get me anything! Really hope this gets resolved for good!

Leather Care by Chemical Guys

3 Attachment(s)
So, i took out all the sub and amp wiring from the car. Never plan to use it and i know that for sure. Whilst doing so, i decided to clean up the leather while i'm at it! So i took the back seats out and cleaned them up in my basement. After the seats, i went to the car. Cleaned up the rear back supports and the passenger side seat. Now I'm well aware this isn't the worlds most premium leather but it doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken care of. Overall, I'm am disgusted how much dirt and grime lie on top of the seats. I left the drivers seat because i figure the guys at SMG will need to sit in it and I'm well aware they won't change clothes to sit in the car :hahano: so I will clean those afterwards! Plan is to drop off car early next week, Monday/Tuesday with a turnaround time of 6-8 weeks! :sweatdrop

Sorry only have pics of the back bottoms right now! Overall, cleaned up really nice, will need to re-dye some red parts throughout the car.

Chemical Guys Review(9/10)
Overall, second or third order from CG. Overall, HIGHLY satisfied with the product and company. First impression was that I liked their videos on youtube and seemed well educated! Along side, a slew of positive reviews across all products from car fresheners to polishes and sealants. Decided to order and really like their stuff! But to the leather care. The cleaner and brush on their webpage work wonders together, firm enough the really agitate the surface but not leave scratching. The conditioner, yup just like lotion for the skin, i saw the seats absorb the conditioner right in front of my eyes, these seats were thirsty! :mdrmed: Applied about 2 coats and let it sit on the seat for about 30 minutes to an hour and then wiped off the residue, hardly any! Then lastly, the sealant! too early to tell because well the sealants job is to protect the seat over time and it has yet to be driven! Ouch... :suspect: Would highly recommend CG and will be purchasing from them when the time comes! Also the stripper scent..... worth it! :boink:

Before(It doesn't look dirty but trust me it was!)

After(Looks oily but it was dry to the touch!)

Cabin Air Filter & Optima Redtop

2 Attachment(s)
Just Picked up a Redtop and new cabin filters. Still waiting on LAMIN-X film to come in, anyone have problems with them before via shipping? The Tracking # says delivered BUT its nowhere to be found. Sketched out i sent an email to them they said verify with post office, so i did and they said nothing and i asked my mailman because i see him so often, he said he hasn't seen any packages... Great... Maybe its just lost on a truck somewhere. On a more positive note, cabin filters changed out and the optima fit in with the spacer. Did turn her over and it was running really rough, turned off immediately though, don't want to ruin anything any further! Cabin filters new and hopefully help remove strange odors of cigarettes and wet dog lol. Thank god they are easily accessible unlike my buddies 08 mazda 3!

Yup! If you have funky smell or anything, there it is lol. When it was on the road back in 14, i always noticed a moldy and wet dog smell from the vents, but she died on me and never got around to doing it! Being so easy, this will get a check every oil change!! Crazy how much stuff gets to these filters!

Jazer 05-24-2016 08:03 AM

Yeah, I was really surprised at how easy it was to access it. I haven't noticed much for smells, other then the faintest hint of someone who owned it was a smoker, at one point in time... the biggest thing I noticed was the air flow, is SOO much stronger. I turned it on breifly while it was sitting in the garage, without those filters in, and the AC was colder and far more powerful feeling. Im going to pick up some new filters today.

I have not driven it since the filter was changed, can't wait!

SMG Racing Rebuild

Just dropped off my 8 today at the shop. Feels so weird not seeing it in the driveway everyday. This will be the longest 6-8weeks before getting it back. I really hope internals are good but i am prepared for the worst :( Along with the rebuild the shop will check the rest of my cooling system, the fans and radiator. I assume being 12 years old it may be time for a new rad. but I hope the fans are still good. Will update once the motor is cracked open!

Im from New England and am familiar with SMG. Had a few friends and others I've known get work done there. Great shop, but do they have much experience with rotaries? I know Fred and have seen a lot of the cars he's built, LOTS of GM cars.

SMG in Rhode Island? Yesterday i met Steve, who will be building my car, yes VERY knowledgeable with rotaries. When i went there, there were so many FD's it was like a dream garage! But I've yet to hear one bad thing about him. He's been working on rotaries for YEARS. Well known for it around here at least and i trust him.

Different SMG shop then, Im talking SMG Motoring in MA, haha. I was like... man, I've never seen a rotary come out of their shop (tho I dont follow them closely, just always see GM, lol).

Twisted Rotors Compression Tester

So i pulled the trigger and figured to get the Twisted Rotors compression tester, I have NO IMMEDIATE use for it but after getting my 8 back, i want to be able to check its health on a regular basis. Every year or so. Also after break in! Can't wait to put this to use!!!

Rebuild Update

So SMG got my motor apart, looking pretty rough. Havent yet gone to see in person or take pics but so far in addition to the standard rebuild I need: front and rear rotors, E-shaft, 1 housing, oil pick up and oil pan. Lookin for useable front and rear matching rotors now. Hopefully RR or atkins can help me out. If i go used, i most likely will try to get my whole rotating assembly dynamically balanced. Really want to send it off to Chip but the 2-3 week turnaround is a bit much at this point. :(

Jazer 07-10-2016 09:47 AM

Oh man, that's too bad the components weren't reusable :-\

"Overnight Parts From Japan"

1 Attachment(s)
Ordered up some parts, New pair of housings, e-shaft and other little things. Most of this was "rush ordered" tuesday at 10pm, they were ready for pickup Thursday at 2pm. Going to pick these parts up tomorrow and send them off to my builder so he can get to work. Also have to ask him to check the condition of my radiator, I think it would be safe to replace it given that its job is very critical to keeping all this money i spent from going down the toilet! Was thinking a new radiator and FAL 420 fan setup to finish up the build!

Parts Are In!!

4 Attachment(s)
parts overnighted were picked up, boy was this exciting. Talked with my builder, he doesn't recommend OEM Apex seals as they can shatter, I however decided it was safer and a better value to go OEM and with good maintenance keep them whole :mdrmed: I think the other seals probably do just as well, and not trying to go into what the best seal is, but for longevity and longevity alone, I believe this was the best route. Will be dropping off Monday to builder!

Nice! OEM seals are just fine, especially for long term. Mazda spent a lot of time to have the proper pairing between seals/housings. The only time you might not want to go that route, would be for boosted applications.. then you might want a harder seal. You wouldn't be as concerned about premature housing wear, as you know youre already pushing the engine, lol. At least that is my understanding! I think your choice is just fine.

He's well known in the 7 world and does excellent work that ive seen first hand. Been building since 00 but he doesnt see too many 8's. Dropping off parts monday, hopefully done within two weeks. I have a compression tester on hand so after the short break in period i will test to assess the work. Break in should be breif as OEM Seals and brand spanking new housings!

Oil Pan

3 Attachment(s)
Didnt spend much time with the builder, just dropped off all the new parts. Now its gonna be about 3 more weeks till i get it back. He did get another rx8 in, and same type of problem. So far, 3 rx8's spun/destroyed bearings. He Thinks the one he took in has similar problem. Well here are some oil pan pictures!!
