Video: RX-7 vs RX-8 --anyone seen this?
#28
As the proud owner of both a '94 RX-7 FD3S and an '04 RX-8 6-speed, I'm not surprised. The FD has sequential turbos and will flat leave the RX-8 for dead in a straight line.
Now, for all you self-impressed RX-8 owners who think otherwise, the RX-8 does NOT have a significant advantage in the corners. In a race on a very curvy course, the better driver will win. The RX-8 has somewhat better chassis stiffness and of course the DSC but the RX-7 weighs quite a bit less and generates more ultimate road-holding grip (lateral Gs). If the RX-7 is an R model (racier suspension than standard), I would put my money on the FD with equal drivers.
I'm not knocking the 8 -- I love the one I own and it sees more miles than my FD. But the FD is a very different kind of car than the 8, much more performance oriented -- if you can believe that. Drive both and you will see.
Cheers,
T

I don't understand the point of kills for cars that are supposed to win...
Like I mean I can understand you posting a kill about how your 238 HP RX-8 just "won" against a 400HP GTO or your (relatively) cheap SRT4 just beat an expensive sports car. In one case it's because you shouldn't win. But in this case it's the driver or the conditions, not the car. In the other case your car is much cheaper but yet "performs better". The only other case where I'd see why you'd brag is if your car is modded and you're bragging about the greatness of your mods.
I mean I think it's kind of dumb to say "my viper just beat that g35! w00t!". Like no duh your viper is going to beat a g35. Same thing here. No duh the 7 is going to beat the 8... It's more expensive, lighter, and built for speed. No duh the SRT4 is faster in a straight line than an 8. It's in all the magazines; everyone who has researched the cars in question knows that. I just don't get it. :-/

The RX7 is faster and can handle (while it might not be as balanced as the 8) better than an 8. I loved the RX7 and still think it looks great, but I wont cry if my 8 is not as fast. It holds 2 more people...is more comfortable (so I hear I never even sat in a RX7), looks better, and gives you as many smiles as the RX7 would.
Why do RX7 people bash the RX8? We are still rotary brethren...stop all the hate??? Oh, and yes...stick a Turbo in a 8 (to make things a little more fair) and it will take a stock RX7.
A kill, man please...go race a Vette which was originally one of the RX7's compititors and "IF" you can win...call that a kill.

OH yeah...and a RX8 doing 16.6...was the driver drunk and on crack at the time??? "Maybe" a auto would do something similar (while on crack and drunk...lol)....but 16.6 is near impossible if you are actually "trying" to do a run in an 8.
Side note: Has anyone ever seen the 0-60 & 1/4 mile times for an auto RX8?

My $0.02
I'm with the "Well, no freakin' duh" camp. Why wouldn't the 7 beat the 8. Let's just try this for the sake of the argument: 7 with twin turbo @ about 255 hp, versus N/A 8 w/238 hp stock. Hmmm... something here doesn't look right...
I KNOW! LET'S TWIN TURBO THE S#!T OUT OF AN '8 AND SEE WTF HAPPENS THERE!
Maybe I'm just stupid, but hey that's why it may only be worth $0.02
:D :D :D

Driver is a main part...but I don't care what type of driver you are, if car A has 300HP while car B has 250HP (and they weigh the same)...car A should win every time.
The RX7 if I remember correctly did the 1/4 in 13.9 while our 8 get's it in 14.5...and .6 (in the car world) is pretty significant. So, based on the numbers it looks like the RX7 was juiced up and the RX8 had 4 300+ pound people in the car...LOL

ok guys, honestly did you really watch the video? the RX8 guy bogged up second gear. and the shifting was terrible from then on. the launch was great but since I'm hearing it was early, and well prior to the 7 just goes to show the 8 driver was no professional. The stickers probably mean he's pretty young too so that should explain to you guys about how come he was in the 16s, about beating a 7 well that's not a known fact because stock f0r stock its pretty damn close. the 7 is lighter and has better torque but they are pretty much even.

Yeah, well my 8 will kill him, when he tries to put two sets of golf clubs, two duffel bags, and someone else in the car.
Two completely different cars, with two completely different purposes in life. I could kill a Hyundai Accent, but why, it is an econo car, that gets you from here to there, sometimes.
I quit reading the rx7 stuff a while ago, they are, for the most part, immature.
I still love my car, and have no plans on driving anything else.

I always thought I'd end up buying a 7, but things changed and it worked out better for me to get the 8. I still love the rx7. It's an incredible car with great potential. Aftermarket support is incredible for it. Even the newest version is 10 yrs old.
The 8 is relatively new. You can't expect too much. But stock for stock the 8 is pretty close. I've seen stock rx8's timelsips at 14.3. that's not too bad consideing one mishift or somene with bad reaction time, or even too much spin at the line will level the playing field between a 7 and an 8.
Keep in mind the 7 has slightly more horsepower, is lighter, and probably more aerodynamic.
So I say the 8 does pretty well for itself.
