Hey wannahave, you need to get a job where you can do important stuff during the day, like watching my video's! LOL
Among other things...lol.

Anyway, ummm...am I the only one who paid attention to the 30HP spark plug video?

What da heck is that all about?

we deduced that a combination of badly fowled spark splugs, and burnt coils, can rob your car of around 30 HP after 7k RPM, and with 12-14 peak difference. I had the same problem. It was a shock to all of us.

It looks to me that spark plugs are the cheepest and biggest gain in performance you can get from your car after 15,000 miles or so.

wannahave, glad you noticed this vid. It's of HUGE importance to all of you RX-8 owners.

I'm currently reading the thread you gave me via PM, but I have to say (I have not finished reading mind you) I'm still confused over this. I'll keep reading and post there...

Thanks for letting me know!

but one question !
Did they have a Airflow machine to have cold air entry the engine ?

if not ! it's not realy a good dyno test, under good conditions !

There is a portable blower used to keep fresh air moving into the intake. You can see it in the video's. Can you define "Airflow machine"? I'm asking from my lack of knowledge of what is actually available for this purpose.

What kind of dyno set-up do you use across the big pond?

Hey SilverEight,

I don't think I saw this posted anywhere before, but what kind of spark plugs did you use that made that noticeable of a difference?

chikmag382, I think Charlie's plugs are OEM. It is the header mod itself that makes the difference from OEM.

I agree..... if you don't run the 8 with enough simulated ram air velosity through the radiator while performing any stand still test then is it fair to say that the testing cannot be accurate?

Excuse me for bringing this back from the dead but Monday night we installed an OBX header on my 8.

When the stock header was off I noticed that the wiring harness for the Metering Oil Pump, which is directly below the air pump next to the bottom of the engine, had slightly melted the wires going into it. They weren't destroyed but it could be seen that they had some heat applied to them.

Here is a pic of the air port which is how it was machined by OBX. It doesn't have to go all the way through just down to the main flange.

For those that are thinking of getting one or have one already one but haven't installed it should verify that the air port has threading on either side of it for it and that the hole is machined down to where the hole is for the inlet to
work correctly.

The other thing is the flange needs to be ground about an eighth of an nch for the three sections where the holes for the bolts come down otherwise it can not be installed and you will get frustrated trying to get it to line up. We spent a half hour trying to get it up there before realizing this.

I drew a line where it needs to be ground to or cut off (it takes a while using a grinder we used a mill with a carbide bit that made much faster work of the piece and gave a very smooth line.

This is before we ground it down.

The bolt that runs along the top of the oil pan is what the flange hits otherwise.

After it was ground down it fit perfectly along with the 3" test pipe. It is a solid piece.

After it is driven it turns a pretty color when cooled off. I'll get a picture of it later

when I have time to get under the car again.

Nice install info and pics "4 years".

Here's the link to the original post for anyone that is interested. I also changed it in the first post. Marietta 8 (Charlie)

If you think you had a problem with heat before you installed the headers... you ain't seen nutten yet! Can't wait to see more pics!

I plan on wrapping the MOP wiring with some heat wrap soon.

The air pump is quite noticeable when running. Easy to hear it blowing.

The header with the test pipe is very raspy but is not much louder than the SR high flow without a resonator and the stock header.

I could post this over there also. Thought the heat post was relavant to the stock melting the wiring surround.

I haven't pushed it above 4,000 RPMs yet.

It is loud if pushing on it much.

The only thing I could do to make it louder would be to chop the mufflers off.

I am a little worried about the attention I may get if opening it up all the way...

I cranked it up today.

It sounds incredible. I ended up driving for at least 3 hours today...

Very nice subtle sound when taking it easy and then opened up it reminds me of a 4 rotor RX-7 video

I realized that today that I hadn't listened to the stereo since Monday...

Yes there is.

That said I am not sure how much is the 3" midpipe, but it feels better than it did with the SR Cat. More rasp, little resonating buzz around 4k when warming up.

Might have to dyno it to see where I am.

I should mention I have the CZ installed with stage 2 map not customized yet. Definitely runs leaner than stage 1. Very little pop pop pop.

I did have one good flare today

Not sure if I can go back to stock cat now after hearing this.

Even took my wife for a ride to show her how it sounds. Reeeoooow

Love the sound in between shifts.

Alright! Time to get some really good audio. Do you have access to a professional recorder or high quality DV Cam? You MUST share this with us.

Wow nice thread that I missed Sivereight.

Hey 4 years, thanks for posting your input on OBX headers.

With the way the header heats up, and meeting someone at Seven Stock that builds special heat shields, and then talking with another tunner on how one pipe runs too hot on turbo applications thus causing people to tune the car incorrectly, which leads to engine/turbo failure,..... leads me more convinced that a turbo mounted down there in that location is not a good thing.

Gee.. 335 RWP to 400RWP turbo with all that heat and then look at this header.

Got to know what ya gettin into before ya buy.

Can we say...... RP Axial Flow super charger?
