... looking at the pics it might be interesting if someone would make an airbox thats insulated from the coolant expansion tank....
SpeedSource lines the inside (or is it outside?!) of their stock, OEM Mazda airboxes with gold foil in their ST-class Rx-8s.

Dunno how much gold foil costs, but do wonder if good old Reynolds Wrap would give you a good chunk of what gold foil does...

Awesome pics! Kinda neat how you can see the details like the RENESIS on the engine cover and the strakes. Hey why do you need an IR camera in the first place?

i have that done.

I took out the airbox and lined the tray under it with insulation, its 1/4" think fiber-reinforced tinfoil on both sides with fiber glass in between. After a hard drive, if I pop the hood...the air box is cool to the touch (near ambient temps) while the battery and fuse box on either side are almost to hot to touch....definetly helped. I plan to do the same thing when I get a revi and also insulate the intake pipe from the air box to the TB.... I run with no VFAD duct.

You know how we can put the dispute of the vents being funtional or not to rest? Put a fan in front of the oil cooler and use shroud to direct the air in the ductwork and use the camera to take a picture.

Am I the only one that noticed that the max/min temperature scales are different in every photo... Sometimes widely so?

In any case, it seems obvious to me that the fender vents only work with the car in motion. This series of photos doesn't prove to us that the vents are for decoration only.

The only problem with taking interior pictures it will give us the answer to the Weak A/C syndrom.

The A/C is not weak. We have too much radiant heat from the center console.

That's why we sweat like a pig and are uncomfortable.

Ha! Maybe I can recreate what my car is doing now as I have no heat coming out of the vents anymore. Blows nothing but super cold air.

Guess it was to much to ask for a car that can both cool and blow heat.

I'm not too sure about that camara you use. Not only is the scale different in each picture
the following apprears to be wrong.

There is no wrap on the A/C hose up against the fire wall and the tube shows 75 degree max. That's bullshit. You can burn your hand on that tube.

The carburator does not appear to be hot. This is also bullshit.
Go take a drive, then open the hood and put your hands arounf the TB. It's scalding hot and will scar you.

While the pictures are good from a relative perspective it was not a infared camara as the one that the military and fire departments use. Therefore it's not that accurate at all.

Are you telling me the only thing that cools our cars are those small oil coolers?

There is no heat from the front at all. This is why I think the camara is based upon some pre-programed light meter. What we are seeing is light reflectivity based upon heat.

I use to work for a company that made infared/heat camaras. Maybe I should swing by there sometime

The scale is variable because that's how you maximize the color range in the false-color images. Since we can't see IR, the camera maps colors to temp ranges. The information is relative, rather than absolute. If you kept the same scale for each pic, many pics would be all black or all white.

- i do not have a carburator to get hot...

- What do you think cools our engine? We have 2 oil coolers and a radiator (each of which you can see heat radiating from)... there are no more heat exchangers!

- The camera is a Mikron M7815 camera which is fully radiometric - meaning it stores the temperature information for each pixel. Once you download the files into the computer, you can adjust the temperature scale and color scheme to whatever you want (was optimized in these cases), and see the associated temperature for each individual pixel.

i love self proclaimed experts
