My 8 with rattle can wheels

Well it seems my wife and I have a thing about painting something around the time of a local drift event (I don't participate, just watch and wish I could)...last time was the roof and hatch of my busted BMW 318Ti (we painted the roof and hatch white to match the hood even though it was a red car). Well this time we got the urge to do my wheels to make them "stand out" a bit more and I do believe I accomplished that highly, lol. I plan to do them in a "Ken Block" style and paint one of the spokes white and put a rotary emblem in it and then shoot clear over them when it's done but I didn't have the time to do that this weekend...so without further adieu, here are the pics, whadya think?

My wife (Ashtin) painting them...she promised when this was over and we had a sunny day we would do a photoshoot with the 8 and my bro's 240 and ...her...;)

First coat of ORANGE

Almost done

All done and sitting beside the car to see the contrast

Mounted and done, don't have any other good shots because it rained today and got all wet.
https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=25950

I also decided to tint my tails and do something I haven't seen done with them

And night shot with reverse lights on

I also learned a hard lesson this weekend about not allowing the car to warm up for a bit before shutting it down, I apparently flooded it yesterday and found out today when I jumped in it and tried to drive off and it wouldn't start, after trying a few different procedures it finally came back to life so I gave her a hug and took her for a spin.

Not sure how a feel... definitely stands out more. Need a pic of the whole car (side shot, preferably), at least.

Any particular reason she did the painting of your wheels? Sounds like a nice deal...

flametail 05-15-2011 07:42 AM

She enjoys painting stuff so I let her do them, I cleaned and sanded while she taped, primered, and painted.

Here is a side shot I had on facebook, I was hoping it would be sunny today but I'm not getting that wish.
https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=25955

I am wanting to get the OZ Allegerita's in orange and this gave me an idea of how orange would look with my car.

paimon.soror 05-15-2011 08:06 AM

Not sure how I feel about them. Maybe throw some black lug nuts on there to offset the colors a bit better. The chrome makes it look out of place.

Chad D. 05-15-2011 08:57 AM

Black Lugs for sure + Orange center caps.
https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=25953
/\This was an awesome idea. Looks great! You should clear coat them, wet sand and wax. The orange peel/matte disappears and it will look stock.

Spin9k 05-15-2011 10:36 AM

Isn't rattle can paint just going to chip of with road dirt and sand hitting them? So before long they don't look nicely painted? Some type of clearcoat might help.

I think it's a start of a look, definitely needs some orange accents somehow...mirrors, spoiler, something...consider this...

http://porschebahn.files.wordpress.c...0664.jpg?w=500

....obviously already way further up the food chain.. so it's possible for this car to get away with this look far more easily.

Roidz 05-15-2011 12:06 PM

Well.......they match your side markers.

rx 8speciale 05-15-2011 01:52 PM

i dont like that color, bronze will look better

mscamp02 05-15-2011 02:14 PM

it doesnt look bad, props for doing a different look. and I would get some sort of clear coat on it, you can get a semi gloss finish if you dont want to just go full on glossy. It will help hold out over time

flametail 05-15-2011 03:26 PM

Thanks for the comments, I do plan to do black lugs with it.

The center caps are orange, but I just didn't have them installed during this pic. I plan to paint the Mazda emblem black, too.

As far as clearcoat goes I plan to do that (I bought a couple of cans for it), I just want to do the wheels like the Ken Block wheels with doing a single spoke in white and do a rotary emblem near the edge of the spoke so I will clear them when I get that done.

As far as tails go I'll give that a shot because I would rather it be shiny and smooth than orange peeled and matte.

Also I plan to do my skirts orange but will get that professionally done.

Wasn't my first thought but that was the reason why my mom hated them...because they are almost UT orange, lol.

Juansito 05-15-2011 07:20 PM

Looks sweet.

I would have went for black and blackout the whole car but i like the orange a lot.

NYC Drift King 05-15-2011 08:04 PM

Looks, cool. I would do the whole GT3 concept. U def need a drop though. Aand get some clear coat on there before the rocks chip away at it.

I would have went the "murdered out" look but I feel like it has been done too many times, so I chose a hella bright orange, lol.

I may look into doing clear coat this weekend, It doesn't get driven too much so I'm not too worried about chips. I have been planning on a drop and 10mm spacers to hold me over til I can afford my OZ's that I want.

When I first had bought my car I Sprayed them black. I have a second car and didn't drive the 8 much and they got chipped up really quick... Also I didn't have a clear coat.

yiksing 05-15-2011 09:04 PM

Not my cup of tea but at least the paintjob looks decent

I'll try to get some clear on them soon then, just didn't have the time this weekend.

That is lame. Besides Mazdamaniac did that color already but at least he has Volks and it was kind of a joke. But if you like it, then congrats. At least you have a cool wife to make up for the lameness

monchie 05-15-2011 11:41 PM

It will really be a head turner because of the bright odd wheel color.

Yeah. That's not always a good thing. That is how the "what not to do to your car " thread got created.

flametail 06-09-2011 08:09 PM

Going with ya'lls suggestions, I got some new lugs. They are the Muteki SR35's

https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=26619

Comparing them to stock
https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=26622

Before
https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=26620

After
https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=26621

Done!
https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=26623

Now all I have to do is wait til tomorrow for my other package to arrive and install that item along with pasti-dip my Mazda emblems (both on the wheels and on the car) to finally get rid of all the chrome and I'll be ready for Import Alliance next month!

monchie 06-09-2011 10:35 PM

Cool nuts you have there, lol

ManyRX 06-09-2011 10:42 PM

Looks a lot better with the black lug nuts...a drop and some spacers would do her some good, maybe do something with the emblems too:dunno:

+1 on Originality

flametail 06-09-2011 11:27 PM

The emblems will be painted with plasti-dip to get rid of the last bit of chrome on the car(it came with the chrome fuel door which was quickly replaced) and I have plans for spacers, just gotta see what I need.

ronx8 06-10-2011 12:40 AM

i dig teh orange. i think you need more than just the wheels orange though.

what if you bought front and rear accents and painted em orange? or you could do orange fender vents? orange rx8club decal on window?

flametail 06-10-2011 12:46 AM

The plan is about 80%/20% black/orange. I want to do the silver interior panels orange and some more stuff on the outside...I could only see doing the vents if I got aftermarket ones like the CF ones and painted them orange but idk about that yet, haven't thought it out that far at this point, lol. Like someone had posted the GT3 RS earlier, I really like that look and it's something different.

It can work... I personally think some different wheels in the same color would have helped a bit. Still interested to see where this is going.

flametail 06-10-2011 09:02 AM

My brother suggested the mirrors, and I did a pic in Forza 3 with orange wheels and the rocker panels done in the same color...maybe I need to tinker on there and post it here to get an idea.

EDIT: Well maybe not...I couldn't get an orange that was bright enough for it

philipchan 06-10-2011 12:02 PM

looking good, now it need a drop :)

Atilla 06-10-2011 12:32 PM

The wheels are too "loud" for a stock car imo.

If you're gonna keep your stock wheels, go lower, lower profile tire n' space them out w/a 25mm spacer. More form than function but i don't see how having orange wheels would be a function thing anyways.

just my two $.02

btw, kudos to the cool wifey.

ManyRX 06-10-2011 12:42 PM

Paint the chrome fuel door.

flametail 06-10-2011 04:32 PM

I don't have the chrome fuel door anymore, I sold it a month after I got the car and I plan on getting some spacers soon.

Atilla 06-10-2011 04:34 PM

lowering the car any time soon?

spacing it out 25mm's will be closer to flush but if you're gonna stay stock height you may poke out a bit...

...mexi-flush :smoker:

9krpmrx8 06-10-2011 04:44 PM

You do know this looks has been done on another RX-8 right? But his was lower and properly stanced. Still looked bad IMO.

Atilla 06-10-2011 04:47 PM

unfortunately we all can't be HERRAFRUSH brooo

:(

I know, I was commenting more on the look. The guy in the aggressive fitment thread with a BB and orange Rota's (I Think). Just seems odd to CC someone else's look almost exactly.

Atilla 06-10-2011 05:08 PM

lol - i was just messin' i agree. :D:

to each their own :dunno:

cfm251 06-10-2011 05:16 PM

Drop and spacers ftw...is it just me or did the wheels look really good in white? Probable coulnt rattle can it, but I would have never thought to powdercoat the wheels white!

flametail 06-10-2011 05:26 PM

I rolled them outside when they were white and was almost blinded just from primer, lol

Chip26 06-11-2011 01:32 PM

Orange is different, but not bad IMO.

flametail 06-11-2011 10:46 PM

For those who suggested a drop...I already had that in the works

https://www.rx8club.com/forum/pictur...ictureid=26674

Got them installed today, hopefully can snap some cell phone pics tomorrow for ya...LOVIN THEM SO FAR!!!!!

Kevin McMahon 06-12-2011 02:30 PM

Too many people pretending to be nice and saying "it looks bad, imo". It was done well and with the bb looks good. It just might have been inspirational enough to do the same thing in black to my stickers. I don't plan on new wheels anytime soon, and cannot think.of a color other than blac that will go well with titanium grey. If you don't mind me asking what did you pay for the springs?

Kevin McMahon 06-12-2011 02:32 PM

Stockers autocorrect fail on the phone...

TrickWilliams 06-12-2011 03:26 PM

Stance does look a little better. I like it. Its different. You still doing the one spoke with the emblem? Thats what Im looking forward to seeing, it will change the look just enough for me to really like it I think.

flametail 06-12-2011 03:38 PM

I've been debating on doing it or not...the issue will be either finding a decal that I can paint over and peel off or a template to use for it and it not look ridiculous. I think the rotory triangle with an 8 in the middle would look good. I think I may do a black spoke with an orange emblem, what do ya think? Might have to photochop somethin together.

@ kevin, I was wondering what you meant by stickers, lol.

All in all I wanted something different, many people just black everything out and go that route but I didn't want" murdered out." I have got a few random comments at the gas station filling up from people who like it and I love catching people looking while they are driving, lol.

8upbad 06-12-2011 03:40 PM

Damn it, I was so excited to tell you to get black nuts... So I guess I'll tell you to get some 25mm spacers!
