The original idea behind HDR photography is to deal with the problem of "I want to take a photo of something that's in shadow, and something that's also in bright light, and I want both the bright parts and the shadowed parts to be properly exposed."

I'm sure you've taken photos before where the subject may be properly exposed, but the background is all washed out or in shadows. That sort of situation is what HDR is for. You take a photo where the dark parts of the image are properly exposed, a photo where the light parts of the image are properly exposed, then one that's in the middle of the two. Photomatrix then combines all the images into one, which is supposed to have both the light and dark parts of the photo properly exposed.

Of course, it didn't take long for people to figure out you could use photomatrix to make really tripped out surreal stuff, so now it's also used for that too, with some spectacular results.

Hope this info is useful for people interested in working with photomatrix.

^That picture really brings out the red pin stripes. Makes it look pretty good. Also I like the reflections in the windows, they look pretty cool.

Basically you're looking to get the picture as close to "real life" as possible in terms of what the human eye can see.
I have actually always known the true purpose of an HDR photo to be to improve on a poor lighting situation. As in, if the lighting were not very good for the photo you were trying to take, you could take the highs and the lows from over and under exposed images to combine them and represent a very broad representation of the color spectrum.

To the OP, take this as constructive criticism... I think the images are WAAAAY over processed... And they are also way over exposed. I am not a fan of HDR, I think it gets over used, and a lot of people over process them and take too broad of an exposure gradient in their combined images. I like them when they are subtle and highlight the natural elements of the photo, but personally, I dont care for the cartoonesque look of over done images such as these.

NYC Drift -- I love the second picture, nice work! Let's see some more shots taken in front of a real landscape

Zerotide -- Great looking final picture.
