Time to bring this thread back to life! Here's the first one for 2006 from a solo run up in the North Georgia mountains.

As soon as it decides to stop raining here I'll go around to some of the plantations later when it actually gets cooler here and take some nice ones.

Wish I hadn't sold my Canon 300D, dammit.

Now - i'm not sure about this pic...I think it's kinda neat - but it's one of the few times i went NUTS with PS.

The first two have great composition but are a bit soft or out of focus, dont know if it's my monitor or what. The last one is also very nice!

 

What settings were those on dmp?

 

Thanks! The first one is focused fine - the car is spot-on in fuckus, the rest is blurry a bit. Must be your monitor! The 2nd is intentionally blurry...just experimenting

Camera settings?

First, second were f/2.8 1/500th ISO 100

Third was f/2.8 1/800th ISO 100

Fourth was f/2.8 1/1250th ISO 100

 

What's the f/2.8?

I see your problem. Put your camera on aperature priority mode. Set the aperature to 8 or so, and experiment. You'll have a more broad depth of field and your lens will be considerably sharper.

In bright daylight there's no need (or benefit for this type of photography) to shoot wide open. That's why you kind of have that soft look to your shots. Experiment and share the results! I find that one of my lenses takes it's best shots at f8, another at f10, you just have to find that sweet spot.

 

That lens is generally tack-sharp at 2.8...really. Some people say my pics are soft - others say they are overly-sharp. It wasn't until I saw my pics on a friend's monitor did I realize he wasn't f'ing with me - that to him, they were overly sharp. :D

Do you really see the car as 'soft' in that first pic? Also - the back left-side of the car in the 3rd pic...I mean, the car looks perfectly in-focus from here in WA. :D

My focal point was set at the nose, and the right side of the trunk, respectively, for those shots.

fwiw, I shoot in AV 95% of the time.

 

Yeah i'm very familiar with that lens, tiz a good lens.

Shoot at f8, give it a shot, i've noticed that most of the time you set your shots to 2.8, i've heard good things about that sucker (my 50 1.8 is very sharp at 1.8, but even sharper at f8).

My monitor is a Dell 2407wfp or something like that, it's an lcd so it may be a bit off, but i also thing with a bit larger depth of field these pics would have been sharper! You have the hardest part down (the part i'm still working on) which is the eye or composition of the pic, that's for sure, you take incredible shots.

 

I just sold my 50 1.8 - I slightly regret it, because i LOVED it. Now I 'make do' with that 17-55, just got a 70-200 f/4L, and my sports lens - 300 f/4L

I think I have that monitor, too! lol :D

I think right there - the front of the car - the focus is spot on.

My good friend dv/dt is quite good with BOTH aspects - the 'feel' for a pic; it's composition, AND the technical crap.

DMP, I like shot #3. Something about it makes the *** end of the 8 look better than normal... can't quiet figure it out but I like it. As far as the focus goes, there are a couple things I might suggest. Cleoent is right on target in post #40. Additionally, Using telephoto lenses, many times you will get soft focus at the longest telephoto setting 17-55 or 70-200. Don't know the make of your lenses but sometimes 3rd party lenses may not be as sharp. The last thing is if it was cold outside and you had the heat on in the car, you may have gotten some condensation on your lens or UV filter.

But anyway, I really like your shots.

 

Thanks much. I use Canon Lenses. My 70-200 is an L lens, and the 17-55 has L glass - they are generally pretty sharp, even wide open at full focal length.

I never use UV filters.

Well, that blows my theories!

dmp, My wife and I took a vacation out to Washington State this last July and I have to say that your state is one of the most beautiful states I've ever seen. We drove Hwy 20 in the Cascades from the Burlington area over to Whinthrop. OMG was that a beautiful drive... and then back down to Mt Ranier. There were some places we saw that I'd love to be there in the fall and see what the seasonal change does for the landscape. We rented a Mustang convertible which was fun but if I were in your shoes... I'd be driving those roads all the time in my 8. Especially the trip up to Sunrise overlooking Mt. Ranier. Dang, I'm ready to go back! We took over 1000 photos in 4 days.

^^damn silver, I wish you had called, I would have ditched work for that scenery. By the time I get back from CA, the leaves will all be on the ground. nice shots as usual. you lucky dog. I wanted to go driving up there before all the leaves fell.

 

L8, It was one of those spur of the moment things. When I looked at the weather and saw the rain was finishing up around 8-9AM I just jumped in the car and took off. My wife wants to do a winter run with snow. That should be fun. Maybe we could get a group together for it.
