Why?

I guess maybe poles do not have as deep a set of roots..
And they are dead wood..

Any other reason?

See this pic:

Compare the door, trim, mirror, etc..
Mighty close.

Most manmade roadside objects are designed to break off or deform in an impact. Mother Nature doesn't include that design feature in her own roadside obstacles.

It is not a 318, it is a Ford Escort. Look at the fuel filler - BMW's have a door, not a crappy back plug in cap.

Neither is good. I've witnessed in person a person who hit a pole 60+ mph. The car bent up and the underbody was resting on the street. Driver died and the others helicoptered out - don't know what happened to them.

If at all possible, avoid stationary objects which don't give:eek:

it is an escort..the BM wouldn't have looked so good;)

End of story from RX7Forum:

Finally found the story of what actually happened:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a scary one: Jenny Pincent's Ford Escort was literally torn in half when she lost control at 100mph on a wet road and slammed into a tree. The front of the car ended up 30 yards from the rear, and Jenny was somewhere in between. She wasn't wearing a seatbelt, and was thrown clear of the car upon impact, emerging from the wreckage with only minor injuries.

few more shots:

more

Spin9k 09-25-2003 11:54 AM

the car is dead but say a few words anyhou 'cause this was one lucky kid! (if you believe the story... which is hard, I must say!)

RX-GR8 09-25-2003 01:51 PM

it looks staged and people are walking aorund it like its some sort of exhibition. if she was ejected through the windshield at 100 MPH the head trauma would be enormous. i dont see how anyone could survive. if she was thrown out through one of the doors and survived that would be hard to believe too.

350 Formula 09-25-2003 02:55 PM

Not me, but one of my best friends saw someone emerge from a wreck like this.

They were driving a mustang and speeding. Lost control and hit a wooden light pole. Cut the car in half. Driver staggerd away with minor injuries. Being DRUNK probably saved his life (in addition to probably being the cause of the accident).

how does being drunk help

good question...

maybe this goes toward the argument that sometimes efforts to avoid an object only makes the chance of hitting it even better...

personally the story seems incredible (uncredible?). i don' t understand how that tree show hardly any damage. it kinda looks like the escort was fired out of a cannon toward the tree. and the driver didn't sustained any head trauma... maybe jenny was wearing full body protection and a helmet?

eccles 09-25-2003 03:45 PM

100mph, in the wet, in an Escort, with no seatbelt. It's almost a shame that she didn't succeed in removing herself from the gene pool.

mikeb 09-25-2003 08:12 PM

ouch

canzoomer 09-26-2003 12:06 AM

Head trauma perhaps, but it looks like the car was cut in half by the tree behind the drivers seat.

What puzzles me is how she would have survived the G forces.
The rest of the car is only about 10 meters away.

If she slowed down that fast from 100mph, she would have pulled about 30+ G's

OTOH, maybe she travelled further. I wonder where she landed?

RobDickinson 09-26-2003 04:34 AM

She would have pulled a LOT more than 30G's , we can survive huge (1000+) G's for very short periods (fractions of seconds).

I still dont buy it tho, tree wouldnt have stood up to ton and a half of escort @ 100mph, plus the front would land further away etc.

Even being flung clear, at 100mph , without any protection, the girl would have been in serious trouble, not many bikers survive 100mph offs on normal roads with armour.

correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't metal behave almost like a liquid under such forces, whereas the static tree has incredible resistance to such forces?

It is hard to believe, but the human body can do surprising things. You could fall off of a 10 foot ladder, land wrong and die. Yet people have had malfunctioned parachutes skydiving and still survive.

Being drunk helps because it can keep the person involved limp and not tensed up. Sometimes injuries in crashes happen because people automatically tense up and/or brace themselves on things like steering wheels or seats, which can lead to worse injuries. At least, that is my understanding. But then, the drunk peson would have been less likely to have an accident anyway if they were sober, so it more than evens out in the end.

canzoomer 09-26-2003 01:21 PM

Well, maybe the tree should have bent, but what about THIS one??

mikeb 09-26-2003 02:52 PM

thanks elara
