vipeRX7 09-23-2003 12:52 AM

yikes! I'm surprised the bmw didn't fare better ...

Wing 09-23-2003 07:15 AM

?? Where is the rest of the car? There just seems to be so many people non-shalanty looking around, seems like a "display" of some sort.

Like one of those drunk driving messages.

English 09-23-2003 07:19 AM

yeah, where's the fire-rescue guys, and the cops.....Get those civilians out of the crime scene......But by all means, allow the press access!!!!

Edo 09-23-2003 08:08 AM

I could be wrong, but I think it's either a photochop or a static road safety display. The spectators are far too relaxed for it to be a fresh accident, and there's no sign of any emergency services having worked on the car if it's the aftermath. Furthermore, the angles that everyone is looking in the first pic make me lean towards it being a fake.

Canzoomer: can you provide any more information or cite your source?

silver8 09-23-2003 08:33 AM

"The car manufacturer was happy to report how well the left front door resisted deformation."

Good Duck 09-23-2003 08:49 AM

The ground around tree looks remarkably undisturbed. The tree itself didn't seems to suffer any damage. I think it's a display or setup.

canzoomer 09-23-2003 09:55 AM

A freind of mine forwarded the pics from a German press site, or at least that is what he says. I will ask him to tell me more.

It IS a fairly fresh crash, as witnessed by the freshly scraped tree bark.
Apparently the accident happened at night, and this was the scene a few days later. By then the rest of the parts that are not wrapped around the tree had been removed.

That is all I know for now.

Boy, you guys are a tough crowd. I just thought it was a neat set of pics..

P00Man 09-23-2003 02:44 PM

jesus christ...
thats really wrapped around the tree
trees are incredibly strong, wood is like natural steel, the compression and expansion properties are nearly identical in bearing loads, ratio wise

at least thats what i heard

Zio 09-23-2003 02:48 PM

really shows how someone can "wrap their car around a tree".

8_wannabe 09-23-2003 03:00 PM

First comment: I wouldn't say Newton strikes but rather Darwin strikes again (as in, natural selection; those unsuited to procreate will destroy themselves before adapting to their environment.)

It is a cool pic, but probably fake.

What's wrong with this picture?

Little damage to the tree. No debris from tree or wreckage seen in vicinity.

Accident didn't recently happen (i.e., not smoking, etc.) Seems like rescue workers would have disengaged car from tree while on scene.

No sign of fire or high heat to tree or car.

Maybe this is a lens problem or something, but in second photo looks like a guy wire is stringing left door to to right rear bumper.

Unlikely that the kinetic forces would allow the car to "wrap" in this way. Certainly it's a long shot, and may well be a physical impossibility.

Just my opinion; I think it's art designed to deter reckless (or wreckless) driving. :)

RX8Lover 09-23-2003 03:36 PM

with the amount of force that the car looks to have to appear this wrecked, the tree would most definitely (in the least) bent over a little. It is in no way a big tree trunk, and it seems highly unlikely that this could have happened.

Crazyfool 09-23-2003 05:12 PM

for those wondering where the rest of the car was, it is about 50 yeards or so away. theese pics plus some were on the rx7 forum.

Just remember the rule...

If you have the choice between hitting a big tree or a pole, ALWAYS choose the pole...
