Yes, it is a timeless design, looks as good today as when they first came out. I first saw one on the road in late 1979 or early 1980 and there was nothing else like it on the road...Hmm, me thinks me sees a pattern here.

I also think the 1st gen rx7 is very cool.
Occasionally I toss around the concept of getting one on the cheap, even for a short while just so I can have a more complete signature. I think if I added another rx to the insurance policy though they might disown me.
Simon.

I had 4 1st gens. all either 84 or 85 models. I had one...a dark blue 85 base model. I bought from a one owner, 60,000mile creampuff for $800 in 1998. Wow...had awesome time in that car. when I was done with it had a fully built street ported 13B with every bolt-on you could think of. Was incredible. I miss it sooooooo much. If the monthly payments wern't as much as they are on my RX8, I'd get another 1st gen in a heartbeat.

I agree with you all....this was a great car...it started the craze for me (rotary craze that is). I actually kinda miss her...gave it to my brother after I got the 8 to try to get his piston head converted

My first rotary was an RX-3, with race rotors, Weber side drafts, a 5-sp from an RX-7, header with a single cherry bomb, tweeked suspension, and few other goodies. Of course, that was almost 20 years ago... I must say that the 8 is a much better car right out of the factory, even though the price tag is a little higher...

#1: I'll take any 84-85 RX7 GSL and GSL-SE
#2: R100 with a newer 13B swap
#3: RX4
#4: RX2

No FC.....well if I can have one in brand new condition maybe. Every FC RX7 I ever owned was a piece of flooding, no starting, 6-port malfunctioning, junk. Plus all the other electrical glitches that seem to affect all the FC's. It's probably not the car's faults....it just seemed like all the FC's I could afford at the time were beat 5 owner cars. But the one time I thought I found the perfect one owner, all maintainence records, low mileage FC, it had all the same problems. They suck.

I've owned two 1st Gen RX-7's, my first was an '82 GS and my current '79 GS(L). I learned to work on cars with my two RX-7's and have grown to love the rotary engine, though I would like better mileage, especially now. My carburated 12A gets 13 MPG in the winter time thanks to all the warm-up time. :P The 1st Gen RX-7 sold ridiculously well, outstripping demand in the first year of production. They were in such high demand that they were selling for over $10k, $3k more than the $6995 sticker price. I'm only the third owner of my '79 and it serves me well. Hopefully I can address the cosmetic issues with the car this winter.

I had a 2nd gen, still have a 1st gen, and am about to get another 2nd gen. The 1st gen is a fun little car and it's great at auto crosses but I'm at home in the 2nd gen. I've always liked the way it handles and the way it looks when done up right. Yes the car has alot of quirks but once you know them all they are really easy to take care of and never worry about again. Alot of RX-7 owners complain that the 2nd gen is the heaviest of all the RX-7s but by how much, maybe 100 pounds? Big deal. It is still lighter than the RX-8! The 2nd gen is what started my love for the rotary and I will probably always own one.

Saw one when I was riding my push bike this morning... nice stuff - the guy still keep it good condition - I think I should start on my 8 and keep it for 20 years....

I got an 85 RX-7 in early to mid 1990s for about $2500 and never had any problems with it. I gave it to my girlfriend when I left Hawaii in 99 and she SOLD IT to her sister when she moved up to CO later that year (I never saw any of the money!). I heard that it was still running great last year when her sister sold it.
I loved that it was fun, cheap, reliable and didn't have enough room for a bunch of people to pile into my car.

The RX-3 was the car that started my rotorlust. Don't have any digipics of my first 10A-powered '73, but here's a couple of the race car that followed it. 13B Bridgeport, 48IDA Weber, factory clutch-type LSD; fun, fun, fun!
and the spoils of victory :D
I guess one day I should take my old scrapbook up to Kinkos and digitize the lot.
