Black Badge

Hey guys, I was curious what my Rx8 would look like with a black badge and couldn't find any pictures. So I made a few of my own, with the help of some electrical tape.

I think they look pretty good, and once I figure out how to take the badges off and put them back on I think I'll paint all of them.

Let me know what you think about the badges or any other sugguestions for my look. I'm going for subtle and not looking to spend a lot of money. The only other thing I was thinking of was painting the wheels black, but that will take a little more effort, so I might do that later.

Just the front

As existing with the Rx8 Badge taped up

Back all taped up

The front again

Update

Thanks for all the comments everyone.

Well it was a bit of a pain but I got the badges off and painted as well as cleaning the mounting surface.

Next step, maybe another coat of paint and find someone with a hot glue gun or some other way to remount them.

Enjoy the pics.

Looks cheap and plastic like on non-black cars. Saw a Mazda 3 with painted badges and my ex actually said "what happened to the chrome on that 3's badge? It's fucked up".

cover the electrical tape with duct tape. that'll stop er from flaking

OP: looks like it could look pretty good. but like racerboy pointed out, it has major potential to flake so will want to keep that can handy for touch-up/re-dos down the road

Finished product

Well I finished up the badges and stuck them back on with double sided tape, maybe not the best solution but it'll work. Check it out.

Flaky Paint

As for those concerned about flaking, I was too, at least a little. To help prevent it I roughed up the badges with some sandpaper to help the paint stick. Looks kinda like brushed aluminum.

And I put on a couple layers of paint, more thinner layers would have been better but I got impatient.

Also I figure I live in San Diego, so I don't need to worry about the badges weathering much
But we'll see, if the paint does chip I'll redo them, probably with a clear coat.

6 Month Update

This is just an update to show how the badges are holding up 6 months later and share a few thoughts on the process.

First off the badges are holding up pretty well, with the caveat that the front badge does show some chipping.

The front Badge, some small chips visible from about 3 feet or closer.

The back all look pretty good

Thinking back on how to prevent the front badge from chipping I have a couple ideas. The first is pretty obvious, which is to put a clear coat on and that should sufficiently protect the paint, but will give the badge a little more of a shiny look. I don't particularly like the shiny look, so when the chipping gets worse I plan just to strip the original paint off and repaint using more and thinner coats of paint. The first time I only used two coats and they were pretty thick.

In other thoughts I really like the look of black badges on my car, I think it was a great decision. Also I'm not really impressed with the standard white 3M double sided tape that I used to attach the badges to the car. It is pretty thick and being white it is noticable when you look at the badges from the side.

Rear badge viewed from the side

Since I put these on I heard that 3M makes an automotive double sided tape which is black and possible a little thinner. So eventually I'll remount the badges using this tape.

Good stuff

Awesome thread, taking on this task this weekend, quick question though, what did you used to get the badges off in the first place?
