FYI the car was totaled. Has anyone here had any weird malfunctions that might explain the abrupt course change?

Also I have a winter tire package for sale locally in Southern Vermont:

I don't know how it's momentum was able to shift so violently to the right with bald tires in the rain.

Well there's your problem. You hydroplaned. Once your tires aren't touching the ground anymore you have no more control, and it will just slide in whatever direction it was last pushed. Which could be anywhere depending on what tire left the ground last and where your wheels were pointed.

What you had, was a defective wing nut that was sitting behind the wheel of the car. You read the conditions incorrectly and you read your car incorrectly.

That really sucks and i feel for you, but live and learn, and get some winter tires so that this wont ever happen again next time.

This is no way to lose your car. Hope you get back into another 8 soon.

Thanks Socket7, for the input. Lesson over learned, just the way it happened it seemed less like hydroplaning, but you're probably right. In which case a tap on the brakes while the left side was hydro'ing might be able to cause such an abrupt course change, where reaction time counts for nothing.

I did love that car, and certainly want back in, good thing I like the pre-2009 style better, makes it more plausible to get one in such a bad economy. First gotta find a job :/
