Targa top or convertible rx8???
Cant help but wonder if the rx8 could be converted to a TARGA STYLE TOP, such as the nissan 350z targa top , or the porche targa , triumph stag style targa .etc.
Looking at the structure of the rx8 , with its pillarless design and its backbone center tunnel giving it its strength i cant help but wonder if the targa or a convertible would be best suited .
ANY creative and constructive comments greatly appreciated .
Maybe someone with photoshop skills would like to help in creating a targa style top ??
TARGA STYLE TOP???
CONVERTABLE SOFT TOP .???
My creative juices are flowing , i wonder if mazda may already be considering a targa or a soft top rx8???

There are no 4-seater convertibles that really impress me. It's hard to see how you would pull it off with the '8. there's already little enough room in the back; you would end up with virtually no truck and the rear pax pretty squeezed. And you would have to lose the rear doors, right? All in all, redesign is significant enuf I'm not exactly sure what you would end up with...
Don't know about targa; maybe someone else will weigh in.

Oh yes a T-top would be nice, but wouldn't be the same, of course than having a moonroof. I personally favor the moonroof that any other top. The reason is because once open, it adds exterior-styling to the car itself. Plus, with the touch of a button, it opens rather than with a T-top, you'd have to unscrew stuff and stash it either in the back seat of the 8 or in the trunk----which takes space.

I own a Cabriolet / Convertible RX-7, which is THE BEST convertible ever made in my opinion due to the integrated hard targa top.
It's going to be interesting to see what Mazda does to make this a convertible. The car WAS designed with a convertible option in mind, but I don't think Mazda can do the "hard targa top convertible" setup again on a 4 seater. As long as it works and looks nice, it will be fine for most owners. But I wonder if Mazda can keep the low wind noise & stiffness in this setup?
I DON'T want to see a removable hardtop like the miatas. That thing just looks stupid.

Targa top with four seats doesn't seem right to me...and I don't like ragtop convertibles, so I'm happy with the small moonroof or just the hardtop.

If you´re rich and serious about building a convertible RX8
I would suggest you to send a RX8 to Finland, www.valmet-automotive.com they got lot of experience building SAAB and
Porsche convertibles (and several prototypes on their homepage)
and need biz since they lost the SAAB manufacturing.

Thanks for your photoes , nice ride and love your wheels , i think i may go for the targa top as i would like to have a more secure option to the soft top .
Previously owned mercedes 560 SL , car was broken into by way of soft top .

GRACIAS , no puedo ablar muy bien espanol .pero yo entiendo un poquito.( i hope you speak spanish )
There are a lot of talented people here in OZ that could handle the conversion , i have already spoken to KARMANN in germany and i believe they are the finest targa top , convertible car manufacturers in the world .
Taking the car to Finland or Germany , is a bit expensive ,however a visit to the manufacturers for ideas is not out of the question .
Thanks
Michael

LL, sorry no Spanish (Im Swedish/Estonian) sure many good
convertible manufacturer in Europe. I think Valmet is the only manufacturer outside Germany that assemble Porsches, so they must be good.
Unfortunatly they lost the SAAB convertible manufacturing to PUCH, Austria. Some say because GM was upset with them when
they forced GM to follow the contract with the Calibra, when GM
wanted to move it to Germany due to low demand (but thats only a rumor).
