where are they getting these numbers?
with dealerships selling the car for a lot less than dealer invoice, even if you bought your car in the last few months, you'd have to take a huge hit to sell it to a private party.

Let me get this straight. I paid $31,600 for my 6 speed GT in July of 2003. The current Kelly Blue Book "private party" sale price (not trade in) is $28,600 (which I think is optimistic based on what dealers sell new 6 speed GTs for). So a $3,000 hit in the first year makes it a "top value holder".
OK ......

If you think a 16% depreciation hit is bad, you haven't spent much time looking at the resale value of lightly used cars.
As I stated above, 15% - 20% is considered normal, 16% is definitely at the low end of the range.

KBB is all over the place.
On some cars, they tend to be very optimistic in their value. On other cars, they seem to be quite undervalued.
It should only be used as a (very) rough guide.
But I've said it before, based on the prices I see in the paper for used RX-8's, I do think it is a "top value holder".

I don't understand the two statistics listed on that page:
Here are the top ten 2005 vehicles likely retain value the best:*
Acura TL
BMW 5-Series
Infiniti G35 Coupe
Lexus GX 470
Mazda RX-8
Mercedes-Benz CLK 320 Cabriolet
MINI Cooper
Nissan 350Z
Porsche Cayenne
Volvo XC90
2005 vehicles that will hold value the best by category:*
Sedan: Honda Civic
Coupe: Infiniti G35
Convertible: Nissan 350Z roadster
Luxury: BMW 5-Series
Pickup: Toyota Tacoma PreRunner
Sport Utility: Volvo XC90
The first list includes sedans, right? Why is the Civic (as expected) the #1 value holding sedan but not in the first list? I understand what the second list means but I'm unclear about the first one.
