Good that direct injection did so much for the rotary, I am sure there are still room for development on the 16X. Meeting the emissions should give the rotary designers some time to refine the new engine. I don't think they'll release the engine as is for a 2010 model year car.

280hp is more than enough. This is a 2-seater coupe, it will probably weight somewhere around 2800lb. But this car will have superb balance and low CG.

Mazda, oh how I love and hate you. This concept is yet another beautiful work of art, and its engine proves your undying commitment to the Wankel. But when will the concepts transition into production concepts? Gimme something closer to reality! Thank god it's only the start of the auto show season. At NY in March, I'll be watching you like a hawk, Mazda. Bring your A-game.

As far as I know the 16X (or equivalent capacity) has not been given the go ahead for mass production.

1.6 liter? Hmm, someone mentioned that a year ago.

Lightweight all-aluminum? Maybe aluminum is the only lightweight metal that will be found in the new powerplant.

We shouldn't be too surprised by a MS version just before a redesign ... or has everyone become so skeptical that we just can't believe it? In my opinion, we never should have expected a MS version before the last year or two before a redesign.

Agreed. This car would weigh in between 2750-2800 pounds. I would take it with 270 HP and a nice fat torque curve with a lower redline (7500). This would allow the possibility for a turbocharged MS version later with 320 HP. I seriously think it could threaten the GTR on the track with numbers like that.

I think I would not read much into it, I agree with the other reply ^ to your question.

To be honest RC I am a little disappointed with Mazda's effort (with what they have released), APART from the 16X (which is great news), there is still no guarantee it will make production and we will only see it as a hybrid/duel fuel.
How is a larger displaced engine going to pass 'future' emissions without the "hydro" option....We all know that is the long term future of the Rotary.
Provided in the end the "bean counters" give it the thumbs up.

So it appears 2009 could be the year for an ALL new Mazda Rotary Car at the Tokyo Motor Show....that WILL be for sale.

You are scary smart. Are you saying that all the changes to the rotary make more sense to try and make the hydrogen hybrid more workable than to merely improve cool rotary sports cars? Of course, we hope it's both, but is the hope for a hydrogen future what's primarily driving rotary development now?

Well, I think he's saying that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. That is, the ~2009 MS RX8 may end up being the only car with a Renesis 2 that doesn't run on hydrogen (and half the horsepower)

OK, thanks, I was just assuming that a MS 8 at this point would not yet have the 16X, too soon. But we live in hope.

I'd really like to see Mazda give up this "flow" concept as an excuse to make cars that look like bad IKEA coffee tables. Maybe soon they'll realize that their best looking (and by no coincidence most popular) concept, the Kabura, actually looks like a normal car, and not something from an acid flashback in a botanical garden.

As Mazda says of the 16X....

Next Generation RENESIS (Rotary Engine 16X)

In developing the next-generation RENESIS, Mazda made a thoroughgoing revision of engine dimensions including the trochoid rotor housing, adopting a longer stroke and larger displacement of 1600cc (800cc x 2) aimed to raise thermal efficiency and boost torque at all engine speeds. By employing the Hydrogen RE design policy of a direct injection system and aluminum side housing, as well as various other measures, we are further promoting the rotary engine’s merits of light weight and compact size.

So I see this as a DI System in the 16X and uses dino fuels only?
Wasn't the SENKU Concept also a DI Rotary?

Actually the FWD RE Hydro Premacy (MAZDA 5) to be shown at the TMS has a 40% increase in output and is also soon to be leased out in Japan... Again I am guessing here that it is the 13B Hydro unit.

New Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid
Compared with the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE, the new Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid yields 40% better output, resulting in enhanced acceleration performance and an extended hydrogen-fueled range of about 200km, or twice that of the RX-8 Hydrogen RE.

That would be interesting! It would match what Nissan is doing in putting the VQHR in the current Z (330 HP), then putting a bit of an updated/more powerful version (350 HP) of it in the brand new Z.

To clarify, I do not mean the current Z's on the street now, I mean the 2009 Z's...

REALLY!, Good News, Last night I had info from an Australian Member with another MA contact saying the "16X" is eXperimental ONLY.

Having said that, IMO Mazda has to do something now for your Market to boost sales of the 8, after all it has around 3-4 years of production remaining.
And we all know what the US wants...more HP.

Fantastic! What's a realistic timeline for being able to buy one?

One would assume that the engine would be called 16A in production form.

I wouldn't mind if Mazda finally did bring that blue MS 8 to the market. I'd buy that bodykit in a heartbeat
