RX-8's Renesis wins spot on Ward's 10 Best Engines (again)!

Last year the newly-introduced Renesis engine won a spot on the prestigious Ward's 10 Best Engines list. Ward's 2005 10 Best Engines list was just released, and the Renesis scored a repeat placement!

Congratulations, Mazda!

Regards,
Gordon

congrats to Mazda on repeating on a '10 best' list that's arguably as difficult, if not more so, than Car & Driver's Ten Best list!!!!

a repeat double '10 Best' finish is an awesome honor!

How in the world can an engine with so many problems rate in the top 10. What a crock! It must be a "Mazda paid us to put them in the top 10" award.

no problem with the engine aisde from a small percentage built within a certain time frame that had coolant seal leak problems.(btw how is your car now?) and that was very few in real numbers or percentage of engines built. expecially compared to other first year engine/cars. what you talking about willis?

btw from the article-

Muscle, Economy: Have It Both Ways With Ward’s 10 Best Engines

By Bill Visnic

WardsAuto.com, Dec 8 2004

Ward’s 10 Best Engines list is completed by Mazda Motor Corp.’s unique Renesis rotary engine. This 1.3L powerhouse returns for a second year fronting the same impressive design advances and spectacular power output, in relation to its size, that virtually guaranteed a win in 2004, its first year of availability.

Ward’s tested 36 car and truck engines for its 2005 10 Best Engines competition, evaluating them based on the crucial engine characteristics of power; torque; noise, vibration and harshness (NVH); technical relevance and basic comparative numbers. All engines nominated and tested were in vehicles with a base price less than $52,500.

The coolant leaking into the engine is still happening (mine in Aug 04), flooding problems are common, horrible gas mileage on some (not mine, thankfully), hard cold weather start (not exactly the same as flooding), probably more that I'm not aware of.

you sound bitter.
I'm sorry your car has an engine that leaks coolant. I don't think I have heard of any others.
It is also unfortunate that some other folks are getting poor fuel economy.

These isolated incidents do not make the engine "not reliable". The people with problems make the most noise. And poor mileage does not equate to poor reliability.

Last I checked gas mileage didnt fall under Reliability. And I'm yet to have a problem with my engine. "Knock on Wood" :o You got one of the lemons guy. Just like every other car in the world, theres always going to be a couple in every bunch. It just so happens that you got the dirty end of the stick this time.

When our engines are still running strong at 200,000 miles or more, all the others will take note!

In racing, the Formula Mazdas run strong for three whole seasons! Most other open-wheel cars' engines have to be rebuilt after a weekend, or a few races. Talk about reliability!

As long as they continue to make it and make small upgrades from time to time the Ren will never be off the list due to the fact that they like it because its the only rotary out there and it makes a lot of power for a 1.3L motor. Of course the issue is always open for debate.

I drink oil and spill gas and love it!! I tried shifting at 3750 RPM and got better mileage, but hated it. Some of the mileage problem (maybe 10%) is due to the methanol that they force on us in California.

All hail the great Epitrochoid Curve that defines the Peripheral Housing, in which our beloved Rotors and Eccentric Shaft, are always rolling forward!
