RX 7 to be released in 2012
unless they fi the rotary--it will not be able to keep up.no matter how good it looks. The R3, is right now, a sweet package, but i just drove one--and no power--almost had to downshift to pass on the interstate.

yeh i was thinking about that... but check this out.. the 16X will be direct injected and willbe 1.6 liters will an all aluminum casing.. I think its possible to have about 280-320 crank horsepower without FI.. like i said, POSSIBLE.
The 16X is spec'd to have the same external form fit, and weight as the current 1.3L, and be truly direct injected. So.... it should give allot of bang for the increased displacement buck. If Mazda further reduces the overall weight of the vehicle it could very well keep pace NA.
Why would it need to be FI? Not every car has to have 300whp or above. It can still be sporty between 200 and 250 hp. A weak sports car, but still a sports car.
Once you go over 300 whp in a car you get 2 things:
1. Too much power for the average driver so he makes stupid mistakes.
2. The power compensate for lack of driving skill so when he is on the track he thinks he is all good when in reality he really sucks.
Truly good drivers drive a low-power car fast. Everyone who say the RX-8 is weak should look to their own skill in driving instead.
As for drag race, come on why would you want to do that when there is track racing
As for street race, seriously.... on the streets you only need 50 hp, period.

disagree respectfully-- the car as it stands needs more power period. to get anywhere in the hp/tq band tou have to use higher rpms. That equals to more heat, more wear and tear on sparkplugs/coils, higher fuel consumption, and overall more work demanded on the car.
Dont get me wrong---i really, really like the R3--good looking car and the quality is great.
If it had 250 to the wheels that would be enough. Remeber most people are getting less than 200 on a oem 8--some much less. Look at the 5K and below power band.
The 16X engine may or may not meet this.
After experiencing this car with more power available, i can tell you--its easier to drive, easier to start off from a stop, easier to drive on the interstate, easier to drive on the track,
i never go over 7.5-8K anymore---no need. Since i can keep my rpms down, the ignition parts last longer, better gas milage, cooler running temps, easier on the drivetrain(wen i drive it right!)
Shifting is fun, and you can still do it if you want, but instead of having to, now its an option.
There is no reason on earth that mazda could not put a low boost supercharger on this engine (s.c. is a simpler and cost effective package than turbo--flame suit on!) 250hp to the wheels with 200 tq is very easly done.
16X i dont think will give you this and they are not going to be able to lighten the car by much. Maybe 200lbs or so?

This will be a nice graduation from college gift for myself. It comes out in 2012 so all the kinks will be out by 2013 when i finish my undergraduate degree. But then comes medical school.... darn it
I dont really remember much Ive read on the 16x. Are they claiming 20% better across the board, meaning torque and gas mileage as well as HP? Even 20% more torque only brings it to around 190 which is still pretty meager but if they can bring the car in at < 3000 lbs that would be ok. 20% better gas mileage would be pretty significant for this car.
^ I think the increased displacement alone is supposed to increase torque and then the direct injection should increase torque even more. I would expect torque to increase by a higher percentage than hp on this new engine.
