Better heat transfer is exactly what is not needed. The much larger surface/volume ratio of the rotary vs piston engines works against efficiency and heat loss through the rotor face is one of the reasons why.

The Renny is a fabulous engine by comparison, but in pulling 230 hp, it's really pushing limits of what one can expect from a street engine where longevity and reliability are important. I'd much rather see the 16x pull 250 hp and get a solid 28 mpg, than get 300 hp with the mileage and other issues we see now.
My 72 RX2 with it's 12A struggled to get 18 mpg (Perhaps my driving style?). I agree that I would like to see 28 mpg but I'm greedy; I do want more hp than that.

Paul.

A light nible car would be welcome too. If Mazda gives us a reliable rotary (crosses fingers) in a car that runs in the 13's in the quarter, and returns 30 mpg hwy, it'll sell quite well. It's possible. They just need to do it.
My 2007 BMW 335i 6MT is making 400 WHP (tuned) and gets over 30 MPG on the freeway @ 75 mph.

Is it getting 30mpg while using the 400hp?

People always compare low power cruise mileage with high power burn, without anything between the two that is comparable really.

One reason I could easily see a potential 'enthusiast's' hybrid, where the last 'overdrive' gear isn't connected to the driveshaft, but rather a separate output shaft to an electrical generator to power a small electric motor on the rear diff or driveshaft, etc...

You don't need 400, 300, 200, or even 100hp to maintain highway speeds, and since it would only be operating when you are in the highest gear (6th in our case), all of your acceleration is gears 1 through 5, normal full enthusiast petroleum powered accerlation.

Having to get the electric motor and the powerplant to that motor capable of accelerating a car respectably is what makes the 'hybrid' idea so terrible for enthusiasts.

But any enthusiast that boasts, or complains, about X power and Y mileage, is comparing full burn to cruise. My solution would address each individually.

I'm with RIWWP. I've always thought the whole "My max HP with my cruising MPG" arguement was just silly.

Give me 20-25mpg combined, with 280hp NA model... and the top model with FI putting out 350. All on a 2 door 2 seater, 2800lbs. 50/50 weight with Rx8 handling.

You will see me drive one within 1 year of it coming out (unless its hideous). 3 things that brought me to my 8 was the handling, looks, and the rotary engine. Power was not a major thing... but IT BETTER HAVE MORE POWER!!!!!

MOOOOOAAARRRR POWER!!!!! More power is ALWAYS welcome for us men.

232hp... 180whp...blah.

I want 280 with at least 240whp... or the 350 with at least 300whp. Have the engine prepped for 15psi factory... and have the "Mazda" option to chip it and get MOOOAAAARRRR POWER!!! So that it wont void our warranty.

BMW and Audi does it... why can't mazda.

Man can dream.

300 WHP & 300 WTQ in a 2500-2700 turbo rotary car w/powerband, reliability, & handling like the RX-8 and I am sooooooooo there.

P.S. In mixed freeway/city driving, which includes plenty of WOT fun, I get around 25-26 mpg.

A car that powerful, and nimble would be an instant classic. I'm sure the suspension will see tons of updates, and at that weight, I can't imagine a stock car that good. I don't want to get my hopes up, but it was produced, I'd be right there with you.
