Going by the sliding scale of the RX7 figures, I'd say you would be right in saying it would be under 20K...

I want more Rx-8's sold so that when I want to buy another car I can look at a hopefully lighter Rx-8 with more HP to boot.

More sold also equals more aftermarket parts and waaaaaaaay better pricing for such parts. Just go check out one of the Mustang mags and you will see what I mean.

Dave,

From January to December my yearly figures (Mazda Media) are a little different to your first post.

RX-8 2005..... 50,813 ( 41,577 exported)
MX-5 2005..... 24,232 ( 23,153 exported)
RX-8 2006..... 23,363 ( 18,133 exported)
MX-5 2006..... 48,389 ( 43,758 exported)
2007.....????

I thought it was an interesting comparison between the 5 and 8 almost an exact reversal of units made.

For memory I think the RX-8's production for December 2006 were 813 units, so yes I would think that for the 2007 year a lot less than 20,000 I would guess around 12,000.

Launched in 2003, the Mazda RX-8 hit the global market with a serious bang. The RX-8 has won more than 50 global awards since its release including 2003 RJC Car of the Year in Japan Australia's Wheels magazine's Car of the Year for 2003, 2003 International Engine of the Year, 2004 Singapore Car of the Year, the 2004 U.S. Best Sports Car and UK Car of the Year 2004. It was also named on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 2004, 2005, and 2006. All together, Mazda has sold nearly 167,000 RX-8s around the world.
This looks bad...........

Subract 03-06 reported sales............. 162,213

From Mazda quoted 03-07 sales......... 166,900 (see above Mazda quote from JAN-08)

Means approximate 2007 sales.......... 004,687

Just aswell the Series-II version is hitting the streets in a few months time

Agree..

And the Series II has to last another 4 years!
They will get a dead cat bounce for 2008/09, but the numbers will fall back to
07 very quickly. I hope the R3 proves me wrong.

It is also very obvious (well most of us knew it ) that Mazda can not extract any more from the 13B Renesis...this is as good as it gets without any FI.
Which they will not do.

Production started in FEB-03 from memory so the 03 model numbers is for the production of the car not the actual pre-orders, post orders & failed orders.

Worth noting that the USA uses that "****" system where all the 03-models get called an 04-model.........

Back in reality, the 03 production figures are all inclusive meaning it includes all the USA 03-models build & sent to the USA for sale whether they used the **** factor "04-model" designation or not.

1989 model year: 16,249
1990 model year: 9,743
1991 model year: 6,986
1992 model year (only convertibles were available as a '92):2245

So on a car that had 174,142 total vehicle sales, they went ahead and made the 3rd gen RX-7. By all accounts the 2nd gen RX-7 was the most successful rotary powered vehicle in sales in the world (although the FE/'8 will probably surpass that). There was never talk of discontinuing the product (like some of the doom sayers on this board).

And the first gen RX-8 numbers are simular... near the same levels.

Just one problem with those numbers. Those are just U.S. sales numbers, not worldwide as is the case with RX8 numbers. The FC was a lot more popular than RX8 is now. But in today's smaller sports car market I think the numbers have been decent.

Ok, just to clear up confusion. here are the production figures for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Gen RX-7. Before any one starts bitching, this is from Mazda's own "Press release book" so "Yes" it is accurate. Plus it doesn't take into account the USA **** factor where a 92-model RX-7 gets called a 93-model

RX-7 production numbers - exports + domestic = everything

1st Gen

Series-1 = 78 - 80
78 = 72,692
79 = 71,617
80 = 56,317

Series-2 = 81-83
81 = 55,321
82 = 59,686
83 = 57,864

Series-3 = 84-85
84 = 63,959
85 = 63,105

Total = 500,561

2nd Gen

Series-4 = 86-88
86 = 72,760
87 = 52,204
88 = 34,592

Series-5 = 89-91
89 = 37,642
90 = 29,411
91 = 16,623
92 = 00,500 (commemorative convertibles)

Total = 243,732

3rd Gen

Series-6 = 92-95
92 = 26,899
93 = 06,801
94 = 05,962
95 = 05,202

Series-7 = 96-98
96 = 04,762
97 = 03,556
98 = 01,423

Series-8 = 99-02
99 = 04,151
00 = 02,611
01 = 02,589
02 = 03,903

Total = 067,859

Update for all concerned.......

Mazda numbers have been elusive for the Series-2 but some over all numbers have been released & simple subtraction can show a story....

Mazda stated in APR-2012 that they have produced 192,094 with another 1000 Spirit-R versions to go. Meaning a total run of 193,094 (approx)

Mazda sold standard RX-8's alongside the Spirit-R so there may be another 100-200 on top by the ceasing of production. So this number may be out by 100-200.?

Series-1 production ceased in DEC-2007. Series-II production commenced in JAN-2008.

03-07 Series-I production = 166,900

08-12 Series-II production= 026,194

S2 Production commenced in April 2008, not January....

But I think your S2 numbers are about correct, pretty exclusive rotary.
