Are you serious??? More sales means more $$$ for Mazda (incentive for new RX-7) and more aftermarket support for the RX-8.

This car definitely blew up b/c now itsno longer the spectacle down here that it used to be. I stillremember back in September 2003 whenI had the only RX8 within a 10 mile radius and high school kiddies would pull up next to me at lights nagging me to roll downmy window. The populous treatedme as if I was some extraordinarily rich ******* w/an exotic car. Hookers tempted me at street corners - drunk coeds would flashme during the wee hours down at South Beach - families would crowd around me at gas stations filming my car w/their cam corders inviting me to their homes - and young women threwtheir panties at my windows w/their phone numbers written inside of them. Dammit man -- where have those good old days gone? Today Im luckyif someone even turns their friggin head to glance at the damn car. I guess we all knowwhat that means: time tobuy some more Zaino

I'm sure this board has contributed a lot in increasing sales as well as helping the right people make the decision to buy and the wrong people to steer clear. Imagine the uninformed buyer getting 13 MPG and then bitching to evey person they see of what a piece of crap the car is. This board must be worth a fortune to the Mazda Corporate people who regularly stop by here. They pay research and marketing firms a mint to gather customer info like this.

I thought that 18k was the goal for 1st-year USA sales and they wanted 30k for subsequent years.

I don't recall hearing that but it's possible. Wher'd you hear that? Have a link or anything?

I can't recall exactly either. But I remember a thread stating something to that affect. But it was a smaller number for July-Dec. 2003 and then around 30k for the next calendar year as they would pump up the volume after Jan. 04. Regardless, I think Mazda must be pleased with the first year results, it seems to be doing about as well as the original RX-7. Let's hope the trend continues.

I'm not trying to be a wet blanket here, but the stats from Mazda were for the total produced at the factory, not the numbers sold at the dealers. While I'm as excited as everyone about the success of the 8, I'm a little concerned about the number of 04 models sitting in the back of the lot at my local dealer. I walked to the very back of the fenced in lot, and found over 40 RX-8's back there and they were caked with dirt like they had not been out of the lot since they came off the truck. When I walked in between them to look at the stickers, there were literally spider webs strung in between the cars. I couldn't believe it!

I hope that someone ends up getting a good deal on the 04 closeouts, but if the dealers take a bath on this, they will be slow to order as many 05's next year.

The number sold is probably a little higher than that, as other parts of the world are not accounted for (South Africa, South America, Asia and Canada for example). Still, the amount left over in inventory seems a bit high.

100,000 vehicle Milestone

Press Release Source: Mazda North American Operations

Mazda Zooms 100,000th RX-8 Off Production Line in Only 18 Months
Tuesday October 5, 2:44 pm ET
- Important Production Milestone Achieved for Award-Winning Sports Car -

# IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the production of the 100,000th Mazda RX-8 at its Ujina No.1 final assembly line in Hiroshima, Japan. This important milestone was achieved only 18 months after production began in April 2003.(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20041005/LATU121)

"Mazda always has been brave enough to follow the road less traveled, and we broke the mold by producing a four-door, four-seat sports car," said Robert T. Davis, senior vice president, marketing and product development for Mazda North American Operations. "Reaching such a major production milestone so early in the vehicle's production cycle proves that if you build, it they will come."

Reaching 100,000 units in 18 months compares favorably with Mazda's other famous sports car, the convertible, two-seat MX-5 Miata. The MX-5 Miata, which has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's best-selling convertible sports car of all time, took only 17 months to reach the 100,000 production milestone.

The Mazda RX-8 is powered by the award-winning RENESIS rotary engine and shortly after being launched was named "2003 International Engine of The Year." The compact, high performance rotary engine is Mazda's spiritual soul and the hallmark of the company's engineering ability.

The RX-8 and its RENESIS engine have won more than 37 important automotive awards around the globe to date, including Japan's "2004 RJC Car of The Year," the Japan Automobile Hall of Fame's "2003-2004 Most Excellent Developer Award," the 2003-2004 Japan Car of the Year's "Most Fun Award," Car and Driver's 2004 "10Best Cars" in the United States and Wheels magazine's "2003 Car of The Year" in Australia.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.

Well, I guess I need to sell my 8.

Too common.

Seriously though, why is it that you always seem to hear these comments about the 8 not selling well? These figures sure don't seem to indicate that is the case.

If I remember correctly, there were only about 12,000 FD's sold in the three years it was available in the states. That's a huge difference.

The RX-8 is off to a very strong start, I really hope it can keep its numbers more along the lines of the first gen and not the 2nd gen.

That was the first year the 3rd Gen. was introduced world wide. Even though it was sold as a '93 MY, it made its US debut in the early Spring of '92. The '91 production was for Japan only. My favorite 3rd Gen was the face lifted model with 280 hp, they sold from '98/'99-2002 in Japan. Man I wish Mazda would have sold those in the US.

100,000 ... I guess 30,000 to 35,000 made it to the US and the rest elsewhere in Europe, Asia, etc. I hope they won't produce that much or it will be too common

That's correct.

My FD was a 93, but it was made in January of 1992.
