Mazda has lost money the past 3 years. The economy etc means that just dont have the capital or anticipate the capital to develop a performance car.
But why they just dont drop the S2 engine ( or even the 16X) into the miata chassis --is beyound me.
It would be an instant hit and the publicity would be preposterous! I would buy one.
Maybe we ought to start a Zoom-Zoom partition? Seriously.

The combo effect of two leading car makers engineering/marketing strength should not be dismissed so quickly. For car starved enthusiasts looking for value priced options - the FT-86 (Scion FR-S in name only in NA) and the Subaru BRZ will be more than "hardly anything", and certainly not "just another tC" as, except for the US, it will be a Toyota or Subaru product. Scion is just the choosen nameplate here for unknown reasons.

In any case it's an entirely new car from the tires up for both companies working in joint venture. No one know specs until Dec Tokyo AS, but the skuttlebut is ~200-220 NA HP (MX-5 167HP) in a ~50" tall car (MX-5 49.4) weighing in at ~1160kg, 2552lbs (MX-5 1095kg 2409lbs). That extra weight is likely due to the coupe format and marginally extra length over the MX-5.

It's also close to what I would imagine a rotary powered RX-5 might come in at, if only! The other rumor is the likelyhood of turbo options available to the Subaru design boxer engine down the road (up to ~300HP), although some speculate Subaru may drop a turbo in sooner rather than later. And of course, after market turbo option will be widely available, as Toyota has said the engine will be built for endurance and strength, not short burst performance.

Then there is the possible MX-5 SuperLight coming. Exciting times these are.

YOU ARE SPOT (right) ON DENNY.....

I have been yelling for a Renny in the Miata/MX-5 for YEARS!!!..

I just don't get it WHY they never did this one...still don't.

Tooling costs would be minimal, way more money was invested in the Series II updates than the cost of dropping it into a MX-5...

All that money on the S2, and they have sold less than 7000 units in 4 years world wide by the time the S2 finishes...They would have Sold 40,000+ RX-5's in that same period.

Sadly Mazda has lost that opportunity.

You know what gets me about the brand...is they really don't ask existing owners, repeat owners for regular input or advice, yes, sometimes they look at forums, but all their updates and changes are born from 90% of Warranty claim claims, plus initial customer complaints 5% (that survey you get after 3 months after new car ownership).

They listen to their Japanese Web Members 4% but no one else, so unless you are Japanese or can participate on their web-member forum it all goes on deaf ears.

All of them like J Barnes MNAO, John Read MA, DD MA CEO, Mazda Europe, 1%, they are all YES or WE men ...every one of them...they are just repeating what they have been told to say from Japan...they (Distributor's Management) patronize you as an owner at a retail level, that is IF you get to communicate with them.

All world distributors pick from a list of specifications and trim and paint colors, they tick (check) what they prefer, Mazda comes back and says this is the cost, re-edited again, add more or take away options/features, then Mazda Japan asks what allocation do you want...the distributor is given a lead time schedule and that is it...REAL hard isn't it.

These Distributor bosses work SO hard at doing NOTHING but shuffling memo's/ emails to each other...and bending over...head nodding.

I posted on a Renesis Miata on another thread just a short time ago....

100% agree with everything but "lost opportunity".

They STILL can put the Renesis in the NC chassis, even with re-worked body and a fixed hard top to keep it from being a "Miata", and the investment cost is basically nothing, nothing at all. But they will sell, and that will increase the cash flow! Would it sell millions? of course not. But even a small run of say 5,000 or 10,000 units would!

If I had the opportunity to keep making money by pairing 2 things I've already invested in, I'd do it! Instead of retiring one complete

All of me is hoping they do this, and part of that is hoping even if just to keep an unbroken rotary-in-production streak from their perspective.

I don't agree.

Cuz even some of us might get a rotary mx5, most won't cuz the biggest reason is , they don't trust rotary/new things.

And if they put rotary into a mx5, it night end up killing the platform cuz ppl love To spread negative press all the time, even tho nothing really happen.

So I think from a business stand point, I think mazda made the right choice.

I disagree that it would have any negative impact on the Miata.

Do you consider the Mazda5, Mazda3, and CX-7 to be the same car? Does one of those models influence your opinion about one of the others? What about the Mazda6 vs the Ford Fusion? Or the Mazda2 vs the Ford Fiesta?

1 chassis, 2 skins, 2 badges, 2 engines is 2 different cars.

Most people who has/had a rx7/8 would not want a mx5 kind of car, simply because it's too small plus it's not"cool" looking enough lol

Most ppl are afraid of trying new things that's why it takes time to build a customer base. If you start another product line now it means more cost to mazda, including to store them, to make them, to adjust the production line, advertising, etc. With an engine like rotary, its better to keep it the way it is, at least for the next 10 years or so.

We don't, cuz we know cars.

But most idiots will get confuse, And ppl who got mx5 doesn't means he/she knows car, one of my friend has a nb, she doesn't know cars at all, she got it because it's used and cheap and reliable enough to go around.

And for the rest of the people they will be like oh that's the pos they are talking about don't buy it when it's not even the same engine/car. ****

The same problem exists with ANY new car, Mazda or not, piston or rotary. It's why the 8 has 4-stroke oil injection, the S2 got a larger oil pan, etc... Manufacturers have to cater to the idiots unfortunately.

And there are plenty of people from the RX-7 world that think the RX-8 is too large. A rotary on the MX-5 chassis is more in line with the FB size, and only slightly smaller than the FC. Plenty of people would go for it. Maybe not the same people that go for the 8, but it would sell.

Especially to autocrossers, track junkies, etc...

Hrm. It isn't? I thought it was raised, but the same chassis underneath. My mistake.

Love the seats. They'd actually look great in a BB S1, or Black Mica S2.

I would not say NO to one...as I have said a thousand times, they (Mazda) cant go any further with this car, just like the REW of 20 years ago it would never pass todays emission regs...this is the reality.

The economy sucks world-wide, so I get why Mazda is cutting out the rotary for now. I wouldn't mind seeing an MX-8 with decent hp and torque. Has anyone tried fitting the renesis into an MX-5?
