I don't think the so called R20B has anything renesis or renesis inspired in it at all. It's a 20B (circa 1991-) that I believe was built and tuned by one of the true rotary engine greats in the world, Jim Mederer of Racing Beat. It's what is referred to as a peri port which used to represent having peripheral intake ports since all exhaust ports were peripheral in Mazda production rotaries prior to renesis. This engine has both peripheral intakes and exhausts which Jim Mederer has been doing since the 70s. This makes the most power possible (Most port timing possible, most direct flow). Racing Beat makes some of the best peri port rotor housings available in the world. They start their lives as a production housing, perhaps FD type (N3A1, N3Y1?).

Although it's possible to use the renesis rotors (Slightly lighter than FD), I don't think that's the case here.

Went to the car show today. The prototype was awesome. The new RX8 - liked the 19" wheels, led taillights and seats....did not like the new facias (front or rear) and did not like the side marker lights in the side vents. The info plate listed it a 232 horsepower. Sucked that the Syntec race car was no longer there, it looks cool in flat black. They did have a cool rotary cut away on display.

The car is headed down to Daytona for some fun this weekend.

Yes, Im pretty sure the R20B is the Renesis 3 rotor, but I thought it was only in the Furai.

The amount of mis-information floating around is amusing.

The RX-8 GT cars use a tried & trusted 20B PP engine. Basic design of the peripherally ported rotor housings have not changed since Mazda first started racing the 13G triple rotor back in the mid 80's. The Furai also uses the same 20B-PP.

The 20B is from the 90-95 Eunos Cosmo & when modified for this form of racing, they share almost no parts with the 13B-MSP engine on our Rx-8's.

Mazda use the term "Renisis R20B" purely as marketing just like "Renisis 13B" for the RX-8 & it works exceptionally well as can be noted by some of the threads here. The term "Renisis" has nothing to do with the engine from a technical perspective

Unlike our 13B-MSP engines, there is no such things as a 20B-MSP engine, although the concept would be interesting........:yesnod:

Since the 80's the 13G + 20B PP engines have made around the 450hp area. With advances in EFI technology, they are good for around 500hp now days & far more reliable ( in race conditions) than any other production engine around.

"The term "Renisis" has nothing to do with the engine from a technical perspective" Is Renesis. and you have to be inform. The name Renesis is the name of your 13b-MSP (Multi side port) It means by mazda that they "reinvented" the rotary moving the exhaust from the housings.

Since you're in the correcting mood, shot an email to Franz von Holzhausen, Mazda North American Operations Director of Design. He's the man who "mis-informed" us about Furai being powered by a Renesis based R20B.

By the way, you mis-spelled Renesis. :icon_no2:

opus_opus 01-25-2008 05:54 PM

I don't care about the engine name, just put the 20B, renesis 20b or whatever name producing 450 hp into a production RX-8, and sales will shoot up. Of course, I am assuming at the same current price. :)

some affiliation to the R26B that Mazda raced at LeMans in 91 and was run in the RX792P and the 4 rotor Downing kudzus. The R had nothing to do with Renesis when Mazda used it in 91 through 2002 and the invented R20B also had nothing to do with Renesis when it was originally used on the Courage motor. The marketing people at Mazda have run with the label as they see fit.

To understand this discussion, people should research about side port and peripheral port first!
