I think every 5-10 pages Zoom or Otherside need to do a recap of whats going on lol...

The recall covers all 8's regardless of mileage. Just those over 60k miles dont enjoy the extra 10k/1 year warrenty extension. Some dealers know of this recall others dont, and then there are some that are suprised when you tell them "No my Rx-8 has a Rotary engine not a V-6!".

What? I heard my name mentioned...No updates from me, you guys know everything. Plus I'm bored of this thread. I can hear the thumping sound of the dead horse being beaten in my sleep. Well, about time for a beer. Talk to you all soon.

P.S. I hope everyones recalls go smooth and easy!!!

We interrupt your thread with breaking news...

Just got my car checked out. Didn't call to verify information, didn't wait for the letter, didn't uhm... well, .. wait at all (I plead ignorance). And I'm not saying this won't come back to bite me in the *** later, but it should be noted that I didn't push or demand any of this. *Do it the right way, not like this!*

As said before, I just called my service rep. "Hey remember that thing you guys cant reproduce? There's a recall for it now." And he got me in the next day. According to the paperwork that i skimmed about my appointment, the recall came into effect on the 21st of August. While I was there, I spread the word to some RX-8 club members that work at the Mazda dealership and photocopied those .pdfs for them. My rep called me in later to mention that I should get my in-cabin filter and brake fluid replaced, while the tech continued diagnostics. In midsentence he got a phone call, laughed, hungup, crumpled the paper up and threw it away. "Well, it turns this doesn't matter anymore because you're getting a new engine."

Feels like winning Jepoardy!
So, guess I'll be the guinea pig. However, this is something I was told on the side by someone else. As we all know, the '04 Renesis came way below the projected power, which was made up for with new/revised/whatever spark plugs an PCM flashes. As the years progressed, the '05 and '06 have gotten closer to the original mark (again with PCM flashes). By having my engine swapped out with a New/Reman, it may have more power than the original from two years ago. Not sure/don't know/just something I heard.

Maybe they will misroute one of those engines going towards Las Vegas, or realize that Japan is geographically closer to me than the US and save money by sending a new one. Okay, prolly not. Whatever the case, they said it would be about a week.

More to come...

Their manager did the drive test also while i was at lunch with my wife near the dealership. My wife was like "Did your car just pass us?" "No, they're finished with it." Guess not. The guy felt it as soon as he started the car up.

Finally!!!! I should be getting mine back either tomorrow or Thursday morning at the latest. (Crosses fingers) My 8 has been at the dealership since July 21st!!! The service guy said that they finally received all the necessary parts yesterday and it should be done tomorrow by end of business day. Others have already been done here in Vegas and that they've been getting "a lot of compliments on the remanufactured engines". I hope it's true. We'll see on Thursday.

You think Mazda would ever consider putting the 95 13B in the Rx-8

Well, made my appointment with my local dealer for next week. The service guy asked some probing questions about idle problems or power loss, and I made the appointment. I'm having issues with a couple gears in my tranny too, so maybe I'll be getting an engine and a transmission... You'd think after a certain number of repairs, they'd just give you a new car. I'll let you guys know what happens.

I'd assume you're talking about the little addition of - REW to the 13B, and the answer is no. Too expensive, emissions were bad, mileage was worse, and the turbos were so complex that I don't even think Mazda understood how they work.

Ah I wasn't aware of all that. What about the intake manifold in our cars, do you think the cheap recycled plastic is better than the old intake manifolds from the 95 FDs? I'm not trying to get off topic but was just curious if maybe cheap parts like this will hold up for long. I have an irratic idle and was wondering when the dealer put the new engine in if they created a hairline crack by using power tools, which may have lead up to my idle issue.

Kewl, thanks for the info, I didn't know most of what you mentioned.

Unhappy

I was on page 5, checked to see how much more and hit....

80

Gosh, been a member here for a long time and recently took a break from the forum thing and come back to this....just great....

My RX8 has not had any issues, but this is really yet another black eye for our beloved rotary. Gosh...this sucks.

Can anyone give me a detailed "jist" of it (you can PM me if you wish), I don't want to be a newb here, but I honestly don't want to read 75 pages of comments...60% of which are often more chatting than informative (no offense, I do that too...)

executive summary:

Engine failure w/some RX-8s determined to be because of MOP under-dosing under certain combination of conditions.

Recall announced to determine engines so affected already - replace these. Reflash to keep same from happening in future to those wo/problems.

As an added measure, MNAO extends warranty on all RX-8s by 1 yr (to 5yrs).

possible added benefit to some: for those who took the free maintenance option rather than the buyback in '04, looks like we get another yr's free service - yippie!

# cars affected : unknown

bottom line: Outlook- Sunny. Life goes on, MNAO actions reassure most - our cars will be in better than ever condition w/these improvements.
