right, you can adjust the gears in the transmission for the application. The issue with the rx-8 is the low torque, and it really shows in the higher gears. Making it longer might mean you can't maintain speed up a steep hill, or so anemic that someone can't avoid an accident and sues mazda.

yeah that's true. sometimes riding in 6th is scary now in case you have to punch it quickly. easier to downshift out of 5th than 6th i guess. still though, relative to my old civic, the 8's 6th gear feels super fast any less power in 6th than now would not be good i don't think.

once my 8 is not my daily driver, i'd be happy to lose a few mpg's for a little more acceleration in all gears...

This redesign only confirms that the 16x is a long ways off.

Speed at 3500 RPM 14.6 24.2 33.4 46.2 54.9 65.1

Gear ratio required for 6th gear to have the same speed at 3500 RPM: .784 (vs .843 in the current tranny)
So, to be taller with that final drive, you'd have to be lower than .784.
So does this mean its a taller gear in 6th? or does this mean the gears are shorter? as in faster? or longer? as in slower?

A long ways as in 3 years long ways, or 5 years long ways...?

I'm guessing someone will have a Group Buy on these when they become available. I can see a lot of people wanting to pick up the seats.

I'm more inclined to believe that it concerns some function or another that everyone BUT the US will get, despite the demand for it.

yup. if so, i'm in! as long as i'm not still broke by that point.

real question is will we be able to buy them fitted for the rx8 directly through recaro -- so there's no fitment issue, BUT we could pick a customized color scheme.....hmmm

A little bondo, and a really big sledge hammer and I think this would work. I just wish they asked me first ;-)

R3 Doesn't make sense! The should have just stuck with RS

I know the press release said its named the R3 in the tradition of the 3rd gen RX-7 R1 and R2 models. BUT, Mazda did state that the RX-8 is NOT a replacement for the RX-7.

So R3 doesn't make sense. It's like naming a movie sequel #3, but the first 2 movies are from a different series and era.

There are many in this forum who believe that the 8 is the RX-7 replacement.

Wow, that has to be the most aggressive rear end I've ever heard of in a production car. can anyone think of one equal too or lower than 4.77?

I've heard rumors the tranny is also all new, so there is the potential for different gear ratios along with the diff changes. I can't really believe they wouldn't change the 5th and 6th gears with a 4.77, that would be crazy otherwise.

Guess we will see, that would add some extra zip though.
