WindingRoad.com 2011...3 model Mazda Comparison.....USA
2011 MAZDA RX-8* 2011 MAZDA MX-5* 2011 MAZDASpeed 3
I’ll just come right out and say that this is my favorite Mazda ever. That’s saying a mouthful, too, considering I’m really too big to drive it comfortably, and I’m rarely happier than when I’m driving a convertible. The RX-8 just has so many things that I want on my all-time list of car wants: amazing handling, a great gearbox, sexy looks, and lots of quirkiness. —SM

After all these years..."This is still a terrific car".
http://www.autoweek.com/article/2011...n=awdailydrive
EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: This remains one of the best chassis on any car built today, and the steering--with its quick, direct response--is simply outstanding. And while from a pure technological basis, I love the idea of the rotary engine and its three moving parts, this car would be so much more fun with 100 more horsepower. Granted, anything you can rev to 9,000 rpm is fun, but the little rotary runs has nothing down low and quickly runs out of oomph are you approach the redline.
Having said that, the RX-8 has amazing throttle response, a terrific gearbox and outstanding brakes. And as I said before, this is one of the finest neutral-handling sports cars built. It just needs more . . well, we know what it needs. This is still a terrific car.

Just wanted to add here to STOP the confusion about the RX-8 ending...
YES, the RX-8 has finished being made and imported for the North American market.
There will be NO 2012 MY RX-8's for NA.
There are still some 2011 MY available in the US and Canada.
If you are contemplating a new RX-8 get it NOW!.
The RX-8 is still being made in Japan for local and Australian, New Zealand and some East Asia countries up until 2013.
There was an RX-8 production run in Hiroshima 23 days ago.

That’s because the RX-8 is not a car for the lazy stoplight racer or the boulevard cruiser. There’s no mid-range grunt to fall back on when you don’t feel like dropping down a gear or two to pass on the highway. It won’t idle from stoplight to stoplight. It must be driven, and it will reward you for it. It gets the same gas mileage going 55mph as it does at 85, and it’s just as composed and buttoned-down at 115. It’s uncannily smooth and deceptively quick. It’s a driving experience so pure and so fulfilling that it almost feels like you’re cheating when you get it for so little money.

Thanks Charlie, I found some great owner/user comments..IMO this is one says it all about the RX-8.
Earlier today I had to name my favorite car, and this (RX-8) was it.
Why?
Because this is a car that separates those who get it from those that don't.
Lets face it, even today (July 2012) if the RX-8 was just being released for the first time it would still be at the very top of the pile....even after a decade.

Wheels, not rims!!

With an absolute world class chassis, it is without a doubt at the top of the pile. The engineering put into the car is simply staggering for the price. It also has the looks to boot (from the front at least). It doesn't amaze me that a car of this caliber (my practically stock 9 year old car) still breaks necks on the street as compared to the E46 3 series (or even E90's), Z cars, G's, etc that seldom catches any attention unless they are modded beyond the norm. Hell, the free-style doors still put shock and awe to everyone I've introduce my car to. Hell, some chicks in a new SLK stopped me and thought the 8 was a Ferrari.
Though I must say, the lines of this car will never be as timeless as the FD.

As far as looks go...meh...I think time will tell, and as I see it the 8 will stand the test of time very well...it is equally unique, if not more so.
Many so called enthusiast time and time again call for Mazda to bring back the FD, or similar, sadly it is impossible.
As classic and beautiful the FD is it would not pass any current design regulations and would only get a 2 star safety rating...it is now a 20 year old car and design.
A 2 door coupe today as we know it would be vastly different, rotary engine or not.

Voids warranties
Not sure if its Been posted already, but I was bored and looking at the Wikipedia page and noticed whoever wrote it added a bit of personal subjectivity to it.
"Its layout and clever engineering, along with typical Mazda suspension tuning, have endowed it with excellent driving dynamics which have garnered much praise and numerous awards."

Celebrating almost 10 years to the day since the RX-8's public order release, the RX-8 still commands the respect it deserves, even as a second hand vehicle purchase.

Sadly for all of us Rotary Engine nuts, there will not officially be any new RX- for a very long time, if ever...
