Congratulations to Mazda for producing a niche-market car with a big wow! factor, yet one that’s profoundly different without being outrageous or impractical. Rev-happy and startlingly swift, with a wonderful howling soundtrack, the RX-8 is both exhilarating to drive fast and a comfortable long-distance cruiser – and all at an affordable price. It will be no stranger to filling stations, though.

I started out by saying I was confused as to how to categorize the new Mazda RX-8. With four doors, it blurs the line between traditional sport cars and sport sedan. The fact that up to four people can sit comfortably in the RX-8 and enjoy all the benefits of this fine performance car, probably make the choice of what to call it irrelevant. Only your insurance company is going to care.
However you decide to categorize the Mazda RX-8, be it a coupe or sedan, sports car or sexy sedan, you can rest assured this car is both fun to drive and practical. In my book, what could be more categorically correct than that?

Mazda continued developing the rotary engine (which does away with traditional pistons) long after European manufacturers lost faith. The RX-8 is vindication of the company's perseverance. The fast-spinning, ultra-smooth 2.7-litre motor is hardly economical, and there have been some early reports of high oil consumption, but when a car is this great to drive, who cares? The low-torque, high-revving output isn't to everyone's taste, but it's less raw and far more tractable than the RX-7 it replaces. RX-8 cruises quietly when wanted and is perfectly serene on long motorway journeys. Equally unique is RX-8's four-door sports coupe body. There are two conventional front doors, plus two smaller, rear-hinged doors which open out in clamshell fashion, giving superb access to the rear seats which can accommodate two adults comfortably. Load space is good, too. RX-8 a temptingly individual alternative to the all-too-common TT, flash 350Z or conservative CLK all of which are pricier.

TRUE to its innovative roots, Mazda has presented one of the most revolutionary sports cars released in recent times in the RX-8. Featuring a clever four-door design and rotary power, RX-8 breaks new ground in terms of interior accommodation for a sports car. Perhaps not as hard edged, nor as quick, as Nissan's similarly priced 350Z, RX-8 does, however, offer a delightfully responsive yet forgiving chassis and the individuality of a sweet sounding rotary engine - all of which can be enjoyed by four adults, or a family, with few compromises. Call it a coupe, call it a sedan: Mazda's RX-8 can be described as many things - but not boring!

This car really extends the middle finger at the philosophy currently emerging from Europe - and long been in favour in Australia - that the way to build a sporting car is to start with a big engine and make it bigger and more powerful and then stick it inside a big body. AMG, M Sport etcetera.
RX-8's incredible engine, inspiring chassis, challenging looks and innovative design make it the most exciting car to go on sale in Australia so far this year. Can't wait for another drive.

The RX-8 exhibits precision, efficiency, and imagination. Maybe it's because the Mazda people are real engineers, the kind of people who pride themselves on being able to do for a dime what any fool could do for a dollar. This makes the RX-8 the kind of car that takes advantage of physics........

The stroke of genius, though, was to provide extra doors hinged at the rear, with no centre pillar, offering space aplenty for getting in and out, fixing child seats, installing the kids or stowing the paraphernalia of everyday travel.

Yes, the RX-8 -- a car we never imagined that Mazda would build. A car without a clear purpose other than to mess with its rival's heads - even though Mazda doesn't even know who its direct competitors are. But despite Mazda's emphasis on useful innovation and left-wing technology, true credibility lies in the RX-8's abilities as a sports car. And, here, it doesn't falter.
The RX-8 is a hugely rewarding confidence-inspiring drive, and yet it makes minimal demands doing boring stuff. It's fantastic fun without being too challenging, and asks for relatively little at showroom time.
But, ultimately, it's all about character, and Mazda's RX-8 has it gushing from both tailpipes. It's a cheerful yet animated persona that fits so many diverse moods, situations, and expectations. And you don't have to make excuses for it because the RX-8 doesn't achieve its personality by being brilliantly flawed or excessively weird.
It's simply brilliant -- no less, possibly even more.

Need a blend of practicality and sexy coupe looks?
You won't go wrong with Mazda's funky RX-8. It seats four in relative comfort and even has a decent boot.
Plus it spins to over nine thousand RPM.
It's the one for real revheads.

Primarily, the RX-8 is a sporty coupe for keen drivers, not a grand tourer. Handling is taut and agile, yet the ride is sufficiently supple to smooth its path. It's the best of what appears to be a dying breed amid the proliferation of folding-roof coupe-cabriolets. For the fact that it exists at all, true coupe enthusiasts should be eternally grateful.

If the RX-8 represents the future of the sports car, we can't wait to see what's next. The Z may be faster, but the Rx-8 is the better sportscar
from edmunds.com
It's easy to say four-seat sports car, but what does it mean? In this case, it means feeling light and nimble, turning in like a race car, and resisting roll in corners. It means splitting its mass 50/50 over the front and rear axles and crouching on an independent suspension all around, with rear toe-control links to keep the tail from wagging the dog.
from Car and Driver
Real sports cars arent supposed to have 4 doors. This one does.
In truth, these days a sports car can include almost any performance car that is exhilarating to drive and puts a smile on the driver's face. Judging from the Cheshire cat like expressions of everyone around here who's revved its 2-rotor with enthusiasm, the RX-8 whole heartedly qualifies.
from Road and Track
At first glance the yellow sports car didn't look Japanese at all, but rather, Italian with its aggressive face, elegant contours and flowing lines. If it weren't for the big "M" on the hood, I would have mistaken it for a Ferrari or Maserati. In fact, I believe this RX-8 is the prettiest car to have come out of Japan, ever.

Mazda’s Wankel — stop sniggering at the back — rotary engine is not the only thing that marks the RX-8 out from the crowd. Distinctive styling and those suicide doors make it the most recognisable coupe around. It handles well, so long as it’s dry, and has the comfort of a much more expensive car, making it practical as a long-distance cruiser. The engine might lack low-down torque and you can see the fuel needle move at cruising speeds but these are small prices to pay for a car only the Japanese could pull off.

"Minor grievances aside, the RX-8 is a wonderful automobile, more of a civilized sports coupe than a sports sedan. Prospective owners should be sensitive to the complexities of ownership, as this Mazda tries to be a different type of sports car. Don't be fooled by the two extra doors; the RX-8 is a direct descendant of the RX-7. "They've put the two rotor, non-turbo donk pretty much dead centre in the car making for a perfect 50:50 weight distribution front and rear. That, together with the voodoo that happens through Mazda's remarkable traction control system and limited slip diff, makes this the best corner eater I've driven this year. A couple of weeks ago I did the same road in a 911 and the contrast was stark. The Porker felt intimidating, bum heavy and ready to bite the user. The wee RX8 by contrast felt elegant, poised and forgiving.
In fact the whole car radiates a kind of quiet quality and finish that you'd normally equate with a European car. The "lifestyle" door system really works and makes this perhaps the ultimate family sports car. In fact the rake of the forward facing rear doors actually make it easier to insert and retrieve a baby seat than a conventional four door sedan. And its not just kids that can fit in the back. I gave a couple of the gangly propeller heads at work a ride home in the RX8 and they fitted comfortably in."
