I have to chuckle when I read your comment. You should join the BMW Club and start receiving and reading Roundel magazine they send monthly to members. It's almost a joke at this point, but so many people have bitched and complained and written letters to the editors about how "BMW has gone to the dogs...", "they will never buy another BMW again...", "what's wrong with the car world when..", BMW has lost they way..", BMW has sold out to the luxury crowd..." **simply** because they have replaced the oil dipstick with an electronic sensor to tell them when they need to add oil! There is simply no end month after month after month of letters streaming in...
And these are Americans! ..in 2010 ...angry owners! They want to pop their hoods! They want to check and fill up motor oil! In their sports sedan! There is a large population of (piston head) Americans that WANT to CHECK their own oil using their own DIPSTICK between 15,000 mile oil changes. Is it any wonder? They feel insulted, belittled, and betrayed when this is taken from them. They want to pop a hood, check the oil in their own hands before they go.

I know it's easy to be myopic, but you don't actually think auto enthusiasts even make up 1/4 of the general public do ya? I don't even think it makes up 1/4 of the male crowd.

^ well, I'll have to admit I have a neighbor with a BMW and he doesn't even know where his battery is... 
...but still, reclusive as I may be, I'd like to be considered a member of "the general public" too.. I mean... after all... that's a pretty big club!

I have no idea! I personally think that non-car enthusiasts (especially young people) shouldn't buy sport cars like the RX-8. Heck, they shouldn't buy the bullet-proof S2000 because there's a good track history of kids wrapping the S2000 around the nearest tree during a rain storm. Same thing goes for the 350/370, etc etc
Mind you, I'm a 23 year old kid who nearly killed himself in the rain with my 8.

Not trying to be the Devils advocate but I was 16 was my AT RX8 was given to me... I sold it about 2-3 months ago and picked up a GT 6MT... I drive fine, granted I like having fun and taking some risks but all in all I'm a pretty smart driver. I have spun in the rain before losing traction (in my base model AT with no traction control or DSC) and that was scary as hell. But I've learned from my mistakes and continue to practice on driving. / end thread jack

Not trying to be the Devils advocate but I was 16 was my AT RX8 was given to me... I sold it about 2-3 months ago and picked up a GT 6MT... I drive fine, granted I like having fun and taking some risks but all in all I'm a pretty smart driver. I have spun in the rain before losing traction (in my base model AT with no traction control or DSC) and that was scary as hell. But I've learned from my mistakes and continue to practice on driving. / end thread jack

Back on topic, I think the various editors summed up why you get an RX8: To go around a corner quickly and make a great noise. Things like oil burning and gas mileage are just slight annoyances.
I know that I forget all about that stuff when hitting a highway on ramp and going for the redline

Buy an RX8 if you want a car that carries four people, handles exceptionally, and is absolutely unique.
Sure, you can buy a car that handles better and has more power, but then you have to spend most of your time driving at less than half its potential.

I think my milage is pretty average. I get between 300-400km (180-250mi) on a tank, depending on how much highway driving I have. On long trips (100%) highway, I've been able to get just under 480km (300mi) on a tank.
