I have an 05 AT. I wanted a MT but the wife wouldn't/couldn't drive it so I had to compromise. The benefits of being married I really like my car but really want an MT. She has since bought her own car so she doesn't drive the 8 much now anyway. How simple would it be to swap transmissions especially if my engine ends up being replaced due to the recall? Is this a realistic possibility?

 

you're going to pay more than selling your car at a loss and buying a MT...

Also the automatic isn't the same as the manual. The engine is different, 4 port vs 6. So even with a manual transmission, you're going to have a low end motor.

 

mysql101's right, cheapest path is to just trade it in for a 6 speed manual

Never hurts to ask. I didn't think it would be easy but if Mazda was recalling engines it seemed the best time to do it.
