2009 Mazda RX-8 R3: Fiend vs. Fiend

I'm glad you consider it an upgrade as well. I'm considered telling the Sti forum about my move, but those guys would tear me to shreds. When I had my 04 RX-8 during the winter I ran Blizzak ws-50 snows ( have Blizzak Lm 22's on the STi for winter). While the STi is an animal in the snow, I was always amazed at how good the RX-8 was. I live on a steep hill, and to this day the RX-8 is the only non AWD car that could easily make it up in bad snow. Just goes to show how good weight distribution and dedicated snow tires make a difference in the white stuff.
However the upgrade is in terms of driving dynamics. One is a fantastic point and shoot car. The other rewards finesse in stringing together curves. You drive hard and brake deep to carry forward the momentum through the corners. The RX-8 reacts very well in this respect. It hates herky-jerky drivers that so many drivers that graduate from school of "Playstation" these days. To me the STi is like shots of Captain Morgan while the RX-8 has the characteristics of a bottle of Chateau Margaux that gets better with age.

Mind you my old JDM STi was the GC model. Prior to even the blob-eye USDM STi. So interior wise it is a stark contrast in trim quality. Even so, we test drove the latest Impreza hatch and it still feels every bit lower grade than a Mazda let alone the rx-8.

Great analogy by the way; indeed like a bottle of Chateau Margaux, the RX-8 is also an acquired taste, heh.
