So wait, to clarify then, and I'm taking RG's say on this, only do this when the engine is cold or hasn't run long enough? But not all the time. That's the impression I'm under. I normally rev the engine up a bit, but I never have cut it off WHILE revving it. Geuss I misunderstood.

I'm pretty sure you haven't read the manual, because i'm also pretty sure it's rev for TEN seconds, Then let the rpms slow back to idle, THEN shut off; and that's if the car hasn't warmed up. If the car is warm, just turn the key and get out.

And Marvin, yes, it is only meant to be a preventive measure IF your car has not been run long enough to reach normal operating temps, but alot of owners do it 100% of the time as a saftey measure (and safe is never stupid).
Basically, you dont really need to do it all the time, but it couldnt hurt. You really SHOULD though when your car hasnt reached proper temps.
I think that should be clear enough to kill this subject.

The "correct" way to shut of your car is to grab the key and rotate counter cockwise until the engine stops turning. The incorrect way to shut the engine off would be to purposely run it out of fuel, disconnect a spark plug wire while it is running, unplug the maf, remove the gas tank while the car is running, cut power to the fuel pump by cutting the wires, pour sand in the gas tank, etc...
I'm pretty sure more than 5% of us shut the car down "correctly".

DMP, that is what you do after a rough start, or if youve been in the car, say to back it out of your garage, and then you want to shut it down.
In the manual it says 1-3 seconds, 10 seconds is if you just restarted your engine after the 'flood procedure'
Trust me, I spent the first 4 days I owned the car reading and re-reading the manual, as I do for ANYTHING of value and machanical complexity that I buy.

No - I'm very sure you're mistaken.. The procedure of rev'ing to 3500 is for shutting the car off, if it's not warmed up. There is no 1-3 second 3500-idle shut off technique...I'll buy you a beer if you're right...

2. the only info about starting a flooded engine in the manual is this...
*hold the accelerator down
*with accelerator down, crank for 10 seconds
*if it still hasn't started, crank for 10 seconds without the accelator
3. the procedure that dmp listed was for short trips, not "if you just restarted your engine after the 'flood procedure'".
