Are you serious?!
Two Rx-8's
One black manual with nav, 245/45/18 in the back and 225/45/18 in the front with Greddy cat-back exhaust
Other yellow manual (mine) with nav, 245/40/18 all around, with Agency Power and mid-pipe (also coolant mod-though it was 65 degrees outside so I doubt cooling was an issue)
We raced 3 consecutive times and each time our cars were accelerating at the same pace...
So being the one without a cat, I'm a little pissed off... I'm not bashing the 8, because indoubtly I love the car more for what it is than how fast it goes... But seriously... I can't believe I waste my time smelling like a lawnmower, sounding obnoxiously loud, and lighting up CEL's just to be the same speed as an 8 with the stock cat...
The only thing that comes to mind, other than the added friction of having 245's on the front, is that maybe I have a slow 8
Has anybody else raced two 8's side to side, one without a cat and seen a difference? Or do all rotaries produce such a drastic range of power output?

On my old (2003 build) rx8, with a custom 3" cat-back (JunBL racing spiral resonator into twin JunBL racing spiral mufflers), I used to go for drives through the Adelaide Hills (very twisty roads, some of the best driving roads in Australia) with other rx8s that were stock.
I used to be able to clearly pull away from them out of corners and up hills.
Maybe I had a freak motor? Maybe I was driving more aggressively? Or maybe my particular cat back did give the car some extra grunt ...

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Maybe the other car had pulleys or something and made up for the difference. People have been known to fib about what they have or haven't done to their cars!!

i've raced a factory freak 8....the ones that put 190 to the wheels......when we lined up being the better driver I would get a nice jump but by the time we hit 70 he'd be back up to me and by 120 he'd be car lengths ahead ((on a track of course )) and when we would line up at 40 to pull to 120 man it was no contest =( this was stock 8 against stock 8
when I put an unresonated midpipe, hks exhaust, and short shifter I could keep up till 90 or so from a launch and was able to keep within a car length or so from 40 -120

I'm not certain, but I think a particular break-in method and LTFT (Long Term Fuel Trim) as a result of a person's driving style may affect the performance of a car.
I believe it's also documented somewhere on this forum that the MAF sensors have varying tolerances (suprisingly large), so this could definitely be a factor too.

he had nothing done to his car other than what I stated... He's a friend of mine so I know he ain't fibbing on anything...
My car actually did catch up a little but lets say a car's length by the time we hit 100...
I just really expected alot more out of a cat-less Rx-8...

well I'll agree that our driving differed... but when it came down to it we just accelerated at the same pace...
and I know color's mean nothing I was just trying to explain a difference....

Screw gas mileage
midpipe/exhaust will not make a noticeable difference to the speed of the car
you're lucky his wasn't red. He'd have stomped you. It's well known that red is the fastest color.

hahahaha.... Maybe that's why a once Red Evo beat the chit outta me...
I guess all I've learned is that the RX-8 is not really restricted when it comes to exhaust...

I agree it depends upon driver and how you drive the car. If the fuel trim is off your frocked.
He probably drive more aggresive than you and is a better driver.
Anyhow each motor is different.
