It depends. I don't know where he is in NJ. My HS lot was full of beat up 70's Camaros, Pintos, etc. However, I've lived in communities where half the HS lot was Mercedes, BMWs, and Porsches.

As for me, yeah.. I'm jealous as heck. I'm 42. I grew up in NYC and wasn't allowed to have a car (or even drive my parents cars) until I could afford the insurance and the payments all by myself. My first car was a Honda CRX brand new - but hey - I was 25!!! Do I wish I could have pulled up to my HS (or even my dorm at college for that matter) in a brand new RX7? Heck yes. So I admit I get annoyed even contemplating a 16 yo driving a brand new 8 - but who the heck really cares if he appreciates it or if he can handle it or whatever other nonsense I read in this thread? It's not like there is a Humane society for the Proper Treatment of RX8's ya know. Lighten up and remember we were ALL teenagers once. And when we were we HATED adults trying to prove to us that we weren't _________ yet (fill in the blank with any nuimber of things).

If i had kids and I had an excessive income I would buy my 16 year old boy an rx8. If he smashes it or got into trouble with it I would take it away and drive it myself. He would take the bus thereafter. If I had a kid that was irresponsible he would get nothing until he's ready. I don't judge the young fellow who started this thread. He's not my kid. I'm glad I don't have kids. What a hassel. He'll learn the hard knocks of life regardless of his dad'S economic background.

does ne1 else find him mispelling amaZing wrong annoying as hell??? well one reason i think MOST 16 yr olds cant judge the quality of a car because they can't compare it to other cars. I mean he probably hasn't driven a nice BMW, a Benz, a WRX, or anything else. I mean outside of a testdrive or driving in a friends car in the parking lot, can you really appreciate a car without being able to compare it to a lot of other cars? or am i just being ignorant? thats just my opinion

When my soon to be born child becomes 16 he/she will receive an older car (maybe something I can work on) to beat up. I wouldn't give my child a new car. But to each his own. You are certainly lucky to receive such a wonderful car as your first vehicle.

My first vehicle was an 83 Datsun/Nissan Sentra hatchback with a 1.8 L 4 cyl, no clear coat left on it, and no AC. That is the only car I have driven that I was actually pulled over for going too slow (no ticket was issued).

I think that you guys forget that no matter what you say, you can't keep him from getting the car. Instead of saying how inexperienced 16 year olds are, you could give him some pointers and wish him good luck. At least he knows a good car when he sees one.

To the old geezers on this forum, maybe you guys haven't been to a high school or college recently, the parking lots are filled with brand new $30k+ cars (unless you live on a farm). Did you guys all grow up in the Depression or something?

Lighten up on the kid getting a brand new car at 16. I wasn't that lucky when I was 16, but I'm sure if my folks could afford it I would have gotten one. Looking back though, I wouldn't have been that excited when I got my very own car at 23 if I was spoiled at 16.

As far as being able to appreciate how good a car is, I think that takes time and experience in driving good AND bad cars. All I have to say (after 13 cars myself) to the kid is stick with cars with RWD, perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and an extra smooth engine (like the 8 and BMWs) and you can't go wrong.

i have a lot more than just good grades that helped get me an rx8. im responsible, mature for my age, never tried drugs or alcohol, never will..

C and D students do not deserve RX8s more than A students. If you make Cs and Ds, obviously you do not try or you just dont care. those grades imply a lack of responsibility, decision making, intelligence..etc

irresponsibility comes with an irresponsible driver.
as fast as this car may be, its the drivers choice to be safe and obey laws. the car doesnt make your decisions.

It's nice your well bred and behaved for a 16 year old. Just remember the car will be a gift from your father because your his son and he's proud of you. You earned good grades, self respect and pleased your dad. He trusts you because he loves you. The new car is a gift within his affordability. He could have bought you an older car. So you have earned his trust, not a car. The car is his option.

I believe that everyone who has said that a 16 year old doesn't deserve the 8 is jealous. I myself have owned 2 cars so far and i am only 17.... One of them being an Alfa 164 S which makes anyone that knows about cars drool... BUt anyways even if the driver is not a car enthusiast, i dont remember anyone saying that you have to be in order to a ppreciate a car. SO to all you grumpy old people, just lay off us young ones just cuz u grew up driving some '85 caprice classic

I have been driving for 9 months...its not that long... but my first car is fast... my moms volvo C70.... i know many 16 year old are immature... many of my friends are... they have fast car just like me... they tend to get speeding tickets left and right... but every thread that a 16-18 year old has started.... majority of them are flames... thats not cool....

I drive very carefully... so i can be a owner of Black RX-8 MT... on my 17th birthday... oh yea... iv'e been working since i was 15... and 90% of it saved up... for a rx-8...

yea well whats the point of waiting until im old and have to drive my kids to soccer in a minivan before im allowed to have a nice car.... not having any major proities allows us to spend money on things that are "all shiny and stuff"

When I was sixteen my dad let me chauffer him in his 911S. It was a blast. I learned to drive a standard shift in a Porsche 911S. Now that I am 44 years old and can afford to drive whatever I want I drive an RX8. I drive it hard on a closed course. On the street I drive paranoid, it is the one you don't see who will run into you and kill you.

its not that we are immature..we are just very fortunate.
if i spent my own money buying this car, id understand what you are trying to say but its not like my college savings was spent to buy this car. it was just a hell of a birthday gift.

So, what are your plans for the future? No college? Have you found an easy and quick way of earning a long-term decent living? At your age, preparing for your future should be a major priority.

I know what you are saying, I'm not all that hard-nosed to be blind to youthfull persuit of recreational enjoyments. I bought a very nice sports car vert - a lot like your Alpha. But that was AFTER I got my degree & landed a job that payed very well, so I could afford it as well as building-up a nice pile of $$$, lived in an apartment, dated a passle of foxes, and all that.

College years truly are sukfull, but they payback for a lifetime of big bucks. Sure there are other options. What's yours?

And, I could buy some much more exotic cars, yeah, no problem. I could just sell my house so I don't have to pay that $1k/mo mortgage. That oughtta do it. Maybe I'll just wait for 10 more years, when that mortgage will be paid-off & the house is all mine. By that time, my 8 will be paid-off 7.5 years ago and I won't have to pay that darn child support anymore either (which coincidentally = my RX8 loan payments). Yeah, that'll do it! Enzo, here I come! :D
