Will they ever release a factory turbo rx-8?
Will they ever release a factory turbo rx-8?
i know this has been asked before, but it's frustrating considering the fact that there will be a mazdaspeed 3 coming out in only a couple years since its inception. in the event that they release an ms8, it'd be nice if they offer current rx-8 owners the option of having a factory turbo installed.i would gladly pay a premium just to have the accompanying warranty. however, it's probably more likely that they'll release a new rx-7 rather than a turbo 8.
any thoughts on this?

Even if it ever did happen...would you spend over 35k on one? Considering a fully loaded 05 RX-8 is about 35k msrp right now...how much do you think they'd price an F/I RX-8?
My guess is that they'd start around 35...and a loaded one would easily reach the low to mid 40s. Still interested? What's the weather like over there?

The difference between a regular Mazda6s and a MazdaSpeed Mazda6 is less than $4000.
That ~$4000 buys 54 horsepower, 88lb/ft torque, AWD, HID, DSC, a 6-Speed MTX with LSD, 18" wheels, upgraded drivetrain and suspension components, and other "smaller" items like different-trim interior, different body kit, optional free two-tone leather, unique paint options, 'Smart' keyless system, and at least the option of having a factory navigation system (for an additional cost). In fact a base MazdaSpeed6 (which really isnt that "base") is actually cheaper than a loaded Mazda6s GT by a small margin.
Now the MazdaSpeed RX-8 isn't going to be getting a fraction of all those options so it doesn't need to cost much more at all. Couple thousand at the most.
To put that into perspective it's more than $4,000 to from a base Mazda6i to a non-optioned Mazda6s Sport. And all you get there is a 60hp, 38lb/ft of torque, a bodykit, 17" wheels, ACC, and electro-luminescent gauges. And LOTS of people buy a 6s rather than a 6i without a second though.

It's anyone's guess at this point. However, I don't think the existence of a Mazdaspeed RX-8 would affect thier plans one way or the other on whether or not a 4th gen RX-7 is produced, as Mazda has repeatedly stated that all their cars will have Mazdaspeed versions.
Anyway, my predicion is that it will pan out something like this:
RX-8, 1.3l NA
Mazdaspeed RX-8, 1.3L Turbo
RX-7, 1.6L NA
Mazdaspeed RX-7: 1.6L Turbo

I talked to a service advisor at my local dealership that is normally pretty in the loop, and he said that Mazda was developing turboes for both the 3 and the 8, but they were having problems with overheating, and are going back to R&D for now. It seems pretty reasonable. A lot more reasonable than him telling me it had 350hp, and was coming out at the end of summer. I appreciated the honest answer.
Have they released pricing on the mazdaspeed 6 yet other than magazine conjecture? I'm considering trading my audi s4 for a ms6 if they don't give some info on the ms 8 soon.
yes there is a potential plan for a Twin Turbo RX-8. Mazda has been working with HKS but have postponed the project due to the working and releasing of the mazdaspeed 6. i heard this from my dealership in NJ and HKS also hinted it in July '05 issue of Modified Magazine

One of the tuner mags had a white Mazda development RX-8 on the cover (Speed Magazine or something). I think the issue was about a year ago. It was a toy for the Mazda engineers to play with, apparently.
Anyway...they had a hood scoop and blower. I think they said it developed 275 HP (did not specify at the wheels or engine dyno) and really improved the torque at the low RPMs.
What I want to know is when will they stick a 3 rotor engine into something?

My mail man told me they're waiting to put a 4-rotor in the new rx9 that's coming out next year :D
