I want to buy a bike, but... I need to figure out how to get it to parks with my 8.

Has anyone been able to squeeze a bike (With removable wheels of course) in the trunk of the 8? How about the back seat?

How do you cyclists do it with your 8?

 

it's not going to happen unless it for your kid... or you have one of those that collapse entirely. Your best bet is to get the towbar in the back and a bike rack.

 

my pocket bike fits in my trunk with ease!

Good Christ, buy a beater and put a bike rack on it. Bikes hanging off the back of an 8. How lame!

 

You can easily fit a bike in the back seat of the 8 if you remove both wheels and if you're a little creative, you can fit two bikes in there.
Just lay the bike on it's side with the handlebars behind the front seats dangling down to the floor.. But be sure to use a thick rug to cover everything.
I've managed to get two bikes and two people in the 8 :D

 

You could probably lay the front seat flat and get a bike in the front/back that way.

Yeah, the one from the European accessories catalogue, but it can only carry two bikes and isn't available in the US.

Those are two custom F. Mosers and a Trek 1500WSD, the combined value of which is close to half of the value of the car, so 'sexy' can be defined in different ways.

For all you 'put it in the car' people, I wouldn't put a greasy, muddy, rained-on bike anywhere near the interior of a car. Particularly when the car was also carrying 4 adults and stuff in the trunk as we were when those pics were taken (3 riders, 3 bikes, with me driving). For me, pulling the rack off the hitch and leaving the car completely untouched beats even the possibility of a scuff, scratch or grease stain in the car. Plus I don't want to be in a wreck with shiat like that coming forward to kill me in an impact. My life is more valuable than somebody's ego about having a hitch to carry stuff safely.

You do what you like, we'll do what we like. That's the nice thing about having CHOICES, even if they offend some people's narrow idea of what 'ought' to be done with an RX-8.

 

We've got a FOUR-DOOR sports-car.

I'm proud to say that I can easily have a car-seat in the back with a child, I can hold a decent amount of luggage (A ton more than my Camaro SS could)

Face the facts, we've got a functional sports car.
And... I dont think that me wanting to carry around a bike is too crazy.

Thanks. The actual rack itself I'm not too crazy about - it's a Grabar that's heavy as hell. My girlfriend got it years ago to use with a hitch on her (now totaled, see the link in my previous post) Integra, and I don't know if they're even still available with such a heavy steel riser like that. I think most current Yakima/Thule/whatever hitch-mount racks are *much* lighter now than that old thing is.

The Trek 1500WSD is her bike, the F. Moser pair belong to her parents. I hate cycling (especially being allergic to all the pollen around now), so I was more than happy to drive the chase car and pick them up. :D

Maybe we do it cause we have money left over and want to buy a bike of a trailer and not have it sit at home.. But thank you for your post.. It was extremely helpful.. Glad you took the time to write it.

 

I'm not sure if you've acutally tried putting bikes in the back seats . But I have done numerous times and if you lay them flat like I've described and use a thick blanket to cover everything, then there is no way the bike is moving anywhere.

Plus with bikes like that, they shouldn't be greasy. I know that my 2 Mtbs and roadie is never greasy.

 

What size bike frame do you have? Mine's a 59cm frame, looks like fitting it in the back seat would be rather dicy, unless I move the seats forward.

Sounds like you had the handlebars/seat forward, and the crankset was farthest rearward? Of course if you had a photo that would be ideal... I'm a bit concerned with moving it around the back seat to find a good fit, might scuff things up trying, you know (heck, it's been only 2 weeks since I bought it... we haven't even eaten in it yet.)

Both Mtbs have 5" travel forks (Fox Talas and Vanilla)
My Roadie is 51cm, But I still don't see how your 59cm won't fit. As for the front seat, I actually move it back a little so as to brace the bike against the back seat.

 

I'm sure you can, but you'll need this.

 

Done it... Remove both wheels and seat, place them in trunk. Place the frame/bar assembly in the rear seat area (all covered with a huge towel). Works fine. Did it in an emergency situation, wouldn't do it regularly.

Try a trunk rack, they seem pretty non-invasive...

 

I have a Yakima roof rack with the bike attachment. I have had it for four years and have used it on three different cars and have never had damage to the cars due to the rack. Its a great solution for the samll trunk opening and lack of fold down seats. I can tie all sorts of long items to the top of the car. My RX-8 is black and any small scuffs or scratches would show up. In fact I have had more damage from the factory nose protector (scuffs on both sides where the flaps go above the grill).

 

I've toted a full-sized bike in the trunk, wheels on and all. I just let the front wheel hang out the back and bungied it to keep it from scratching anything.

The bike's owner had been walking it down the streetside with a flat tire on a hot and muggy Houston day, so I offered him a ride home. Worked just fine.
