I don't think a new car should have visible rust - any! I want Mazda to take care of it. It looks like crap. These cars have 5 years worth of rust protection... I think this counts.

Anyone have any experience with this topic?

i noticed that problem to with some of the 8's they had sitting out on the dealership lot for most of the bloody winter(i think they were out there for at least 3 months)! I told them if my car has rust on the brakes like that I would refuse to accept it. Fortunatley the 8 I recieved just came off the boat from Japan and there was 0 rust.. If mine had rust(and it was very excessive from what I saw on the lot), i'd be pissed as well and expect that to be covered (or cleaned) under warrenty..

EVERY car I've ever owned with disc brakes would develop rust when left for a day or two without use, from many different manufacturers: Nissan, Honda, Mazda (Miata and 8)
Not to sound harsh, but if this is your biggest issue, i suggest you move to someplace with no moisture.

You're wrong - brake rotor rust does NOT count with respect to rust warranty. Brake rotors are consumable items, for one - and they're made of unprotected steel/iron, for god's sake! What do you expect them to do?

Sorry, but rotors rust, on many varied cars. It's no big deal, and your dealer (a Mazda dealer or any other car dealer) won't do anything about it - nor should they.

I think he may be referring to the brake HUBs, not the rotors. I have seen 8's hubs that looked like total crap - on the dealer’s lot no less! If Mazda sees fit to expose the brakes as they do with our 8's, they should have had at least the smarts to paint the hubs and calipers to keep them from looking so bad, so quickly, IMHO.

the rotors show rust on all cars. maybe if you get to replace them with carbon fiber rotors :D on the hubs it sucks a bit that it shows, i agree.

I made a template from cardboard and paint them with high temp paint after a good wire brush job.

All the cars on the lot get it. Some people take issue with it most don't

My 8 has a little rust too. I didn't see it at first but my brother came home and that was the first thing he pointed out. I know the rotors rust but IMHO the hub shouldn't. I plan on going to the dealer this weekend and complaining about this and a couple other things.

Keep in mind that the warranty is for rust-through (if I remember correctly), not simply rust. Lots of people get screwed with that, unfortunately, when thry have rust on their body panels. The dealers won't do a thing until they can poke a screwdriver through it.

No offense? What an *******. Yes, I took offense. Did you read the damn post before calling me delusional. Did I say ROTORS? No. Did I say HUBS? Yes. I know rotors will develop a light rust in moist conditions. Should HUBS show significant rust on a new car no.

This is exactly what I was referring to (thanks!). Based on, Bob's understanding of the warranty, it sounds like the thing to do is sand and paint the hubs and calipers - probably won't qualify under the warranty coverage.

Unfortunately not covered under warranty but should be easy to fix.

All the RX8s will have it, unless your car is never exposed to water.

The rust will start to form within seconds of being sprayed with water.

I did you should check out the pix they came out awesome.
just sand em down
then paint em takes 45 mins if you have a impact gun and a nice jack and jack stands.

Anyway I already posted a solution to this, Mazda has to paint your rotor hubs if you want them too. It's under the 12000 mile/12 month short warranty. I know this because I just had this done by the dealer at no charge. Search the forum for rusting rotors solution. I posted it.

I painted the back ones myself, the ones on the front are not too bad yet. The dealer's answer was they are metal - they rust. Well check out a few other cars in your nearby parking lot, garage or whatever. You won't find very many new cars a year old or less with rust on the hubs. This is an issue with RX-8s. I looked at the ones sitting on the lot last time I was at the dealer and most of them had it. Think they are going to sell a "new" car with rust on it? Next time I go in I am going to mention it to them again.
