bad knee. wheel chair bound so no use of leg to clutch with. Likes having the paddle shifters to play with. lives in an area with severe traffic problems so doesnt like to have to shift all the time. never learned how to drive a manual but really likes the car. loves twisties and likes to have both hands on the wheel but doesnt care about off the line acceleration.

There are many reasons, just as there are too buy stick shift. It's my 7th rotary and I have a bad back but will not give up my rotary engine. Mazda cars a drivers cars and are a good value too. Yes they dont sip gas, it would be nice, but not the most importaint thing to me. It's a new and diferant . When they can give me a new back I will get a 6 spd and will enjoy it even more!

For me $ was the driving factor to get the auto. I got a hell of a deal on my auto, couple that with the fact that traffic is beast and it sucks not being able to have a designated driver that can drive a stick my decision was made. Besides--I use to own an FD a couple of cars ago, and the 6spd RX8 or 350Z wouldn't have come close to the performance of that car--so for speed-been there done that. Maybe next time around I'll holla at the Mazdaspeed RX8 in 6spd or the SMG tranny option. Oh--the RX8 auto still handles and looks as good as any RX8.

RX8 and a Truk....
some ppl get their performance from other outlets...Sportbikes...Dirt Bikes...boats...great sex lives...
Some ppl just don't care about finding another 1 second in e/t's. they are more worried about having a great looking, handling car.

???? You cant make use of the rotary's qualities with an automatic. The RX8 is a shitty buy if you don't have a stick. The car rattles, has poor gas mileage and is expensive.

Boy, I sure am glad we all asked your opinion Paterno......Oh wait, we didn't...
Why you pop a tall glass of "Shut the hell up!"....J/K :D
We have two 8's in our family, one manual (mine) and one auto (pops)...we both love our cars....and think we made the right decision.....
The old saying: "Opinions are like .... " comes to mind.....Again, Just Kidding Paterno...giving you a hard time......

I think I can understand the auto bashing IF I were to drive the RX-8 exclusively in automatic mode. But I don't. Minus the extra RPMs till redline, I think I'm exercising the rotary just fine. Yeah it "only" has a 7200 RPM redline, but taking a look around, that's already quite a bit more than the average car has.
I personally like shifting, but hate having to deal with a clutch. SMG would be the ideal choice for me, but I'll settle for tiptronic for now. Sure all the manual fanboys tells me what the hell was I thinking, but I could care less. In the end, I'm the one that has to drive the thing day in, day out, and I simply do_not_want to deal with a clutch. Sure, I know how to drive manual, but I refuse to get in a machine long term that works 100% based upon my input that could potentially threaten my life if I make a mistake. In an automatic, I can expect and trust the machine to behave a certain way, every_single_time, without fail.
I don't get why all the manual fanboys just HAVE to create a thread like this every now and then or reply negatively to a thread specifically dealing with questions on automatics.
