A test drive does give you a lot of information about the car, and certainly helps in the purchase. But, input from people who have driven the cars for thousands of miles can be quite useful. Things like real world fuel economy, tire wear, oil usage, how well everything stands up to abuse etc etc can only be found out through experience with the car. I don't mind people asking, though, I wish they would do a search first.

However, what pisses me off are the people that post in these threads simply in bash the other car.

Maybe you should just relax a little, you don't have to read the threads you know.

no flameing here,I'm in the same boat. 99.9% of the time this is a VERY helpful forum. Have to say though after owning a Nissan and "belonging" to Nissanforums.com it's like night and day, lots of helpful owners with a good knowlege of the 8, Nissanforums was filled the total opposite. Sorry anytime I can take a shot at Nissan I TAKE IT!

It's pretty much what these forums are for. People who know nothing about the car come here to settle their mind and be assured that their 30k investment is a good one. I can understand why it frustrates you but if it's helpful to someone, it doesnt' bother me.

Incase anyone cares, I attached a pic of the STI less the monkey bar. Looks alright, needs a little something back there though.

Yep, the Subaru community is pretty divided on the STi wing. It's usually pretty easy to find someone in your area willing to swap out their WRX trunk for an STi trunk, often the STi owner gets cash as well. For me I don't love the wing, I don't hate it either. I feel wingless STis look a little funny though, and that the STi wing balances out the appearance. Ditch the scoop or get a smaller scoop and get an FMIC and I rather like wingless STis, but as long as they have the big hoodscoop keep the wing I say.

Yeah, it looks a little front heavy without some sort of wing. I don't really mind the wing, it looks natural with the wing. If I think STI, I think big wings. I certainly wouldn't say no to the car because of it, especially when its easily replaced.

Do you know if the rally car is any wider than the STI. The fenders look a little more flared than the STI, but I can't find a picture that gives me a good comparison.

They just recently made it wider, by how much I'm not sure. The 05 STi is also about a half inch wider than the 04 in the rear and has wider wheels which did a surprising amount to improve handling. It's amazing what things as small as that can do to improve a car.

Now, if you could get rid of that silly-looking hood scoop, it might just turn into a reasonably attractive car.

STI without the ironing board is a decent looking car. Evo IMO is not.

Would be nice to see an AWD Mazda3 with that 276hp MS Mazda6 motor.

That pic isn't too bad and the intake isn't horrible either. It does need something in the back.

The way this thread is going, might as well rename it "Why the STi?" and move it to the general auto section.

ditto.

Did drive the 350Z (auto) and the G35 (auto) Both cars had impressive power. But...

The Z was a little harsh and with that rear strut through the "trunk", there was not much room for anything back there. Not very practical. The G35 coupe has back seat but unless you are a contortionist, good luck getting into it. I also agree with a previous post that said the interior of the G35 was "grandpa" especially the sedan version. Price was also an issue.

Considered the Subaru for about 35 minutes. The looks of that car killed it for me. Didnt need to test drive it.

Looked at the S2000 years ago, nice but they make me yawn a little now. Miata has the same effect on me.

RX-8:

The looks are "dead sexy".

The trunk is not huge but a trip to Sam's Club is still doable.

Loved the freestyle doors on the 8 and the back seats (nice to be able to carry four, if Im so inclined). And I love Blue Oyster Cult (obscure reference).

But the rotary engine!!! Loved my 12A and now love my Renesis.

Haha! You're showing your age, Valpac. I remember seeing Blue Oyster Cult as the front band for Foghat way back in my (misspent) youth. Funny, but half the crowd left when BOC finished. Guess Foghat should have been the front band. :D

Half the crowd left probably because they ran out of weed.

That's funny, I yelled that out at a hockey game last weekend:

"You know what this game needs? MORE COWBELL!!!" :D

...I think like 2 people in the crowd actually knew what I was talking about :p

the fact that I might like the STI now, but when i'm 35 (in 5 years) I wasn't so sure i'd still like it.
That's what the Legacy GT is for. But it "only" has 250HP. And it weighs 3300lbs so it sure wont handle as well as the RX-8. It is a good alternative to the STi "boy-racer" theme though.

EDIT: Sorry, the GT turbo non-limited model is 3300lbs.
