Why is nordic green so uncommon?

I did a search on www.mazdausa.com for cars in my area and out of 167 cars in 150 mile radius, only three were nordic green. I knew it was uncommon, but less than 2%, that surprised me.

Personally, I think it is tight as tight can be. Like the titanium, it looks different in different lighting. Paired with the black/chaperral leather it will look very classy. True it is not as "sporty" looking as, say, the red or yellow. It is more subdued though, people won't even notice you till you fly by them on the free way.... Then they'll prolly say to themselves something like "whoa... nice car." I kinda like that.

I usually don't like green, but I was fairly impressed with the pictures of the one that is traveling around the states right now.

I'm a nordic green/chaperral pre-order (still on the frickin' boat), and I can't wait to see it. I've been frustrated at the lack of green pre-production shots -- there is not a single "official" shot of a green car that I've been able to find.

For me, I wanted a car with a "deep" color -- a deep, deep red or deep, deep blue would have been perfect. The red, blue, and yellow were all "candy" colors -- bright, cartoony, and now what I wanted. The green was the only color that was dark without being black.

One friend posited that green was unpopular because it was too popular, and everyone was avoiding playing a favorite. I think it's because "green" is too vague and "nordic" doesn't help -- are we talking a Brisith Racing Green, or something limey to fit with the candy theme. Without any pictures -- none! -- I doubt that people wanted to take the chance. Either way, I think I'll dig my unique RX-8 being that much more unique.

It's so rare because nobody had slightest idea what it looked like. Yet, the few pictures that showed the color where still difficult to decipher. The bold one's decided to actually choose the color without actually having the benefit of seeing it.

As more information started to bleed in, it was discovered that the green mica had nice gold flecks in it, which shows under bright sunlight. The color itself is very dark and in shadow may occasionally be confused as black.

Numbers have revealed, from your own conclusions, and a quick glance at rx8owner.com that green is in fact a very rare chosen color. As such, it will be the novelty out of all the RX-8's, if you like dark colored cars, then it was a good choice indeed.

As for me, I picked gray because I liked the color, but had no idea until after, that gray and silver combined will make up 40% of all the RX-8's in North America.

Go to this thread, ignore the actual poll and instead look at my comments.

probably because market research shows that green is not a popular color for sports cars...red is perhaps the most popular sports car color followed by yellow, silver, and black...white isn't even a popular sports car color but more popular than green...green is best suited for SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee forest green

Jack Byrnes: I'm just curious, did you pick the color of the car?
Greg Focker: Uh no, the guy at the window did, why?
Jack Byrnes: Well they say geniuses pick green.
Greg Focker: Oh.
Jack Byrnes: But you didn't pick it.

I swapped my order 1st allocation Titanium Gray to Nordic Green. (sigh, another two to three months wait .) Seeing the green on the RX-8 in person is a little bit of shock at first. When I first saw one in Japan, I thought it was dark purple, then dark blue, then a shiny black with a wierd tint in the clear coat. I couldn't figure out what it was until the sales person told me what it was.

Photo of me playing tourist in Japan sitting in a Nordic Green. It looks dark blue in the photo doesn't it?

Unfortanately, I think is Elara is a bit miffed with here particular situation regarding the delivery of her car. Don't see her posting much.

I chose the Nordic Green as well without knowing exactly what it would look like, just like I didn't know how the car would handle/perform, what the interior was like, what the car really looked like in person, whether I could see out the windows or reach the clutch (I'm short), or even knowing the final price (I kept adding options as they became available)!!! A great leap of faith.

I'm here- just jealous cause it's going to take another month for my car to get here and you guys are all getting them in a week or so!

I chose the nordic green because I saw the color chip on the wall at detroit and thought it was gorgeous- looked so dark it was almost black, but was bluey-green at the same time. My dealer must have taken a cue from the two people who ordered the green, because out of the 14 cars they've got listed, something like SIX of them are nordic green!

The first time I saw the color nordic green was at the 2003 Detroit International Auto Show. It was only a 8" by 5" sample, but I knew right then it was the color I wanted. Having already seen a sample that is why I was so surprised not many people wanted it. On the other hand... how many of you got to see that color sample... very few I can guess. Therefore, with all the different shades of green in the world, I can see why the hesitation in ordering it. I mean, the sample on the mazdausa.com page is a flat color that could have come out of the smaller crayola boxes. If that was all I had to go on, I would be hesitant though.

P.S. Jsusuki -- nice photo... really shows off the different colors you get with the nordic

I wouldn't be so sure, I'll bet you get yours the same time the rest of them are released.

I might have considered the green, but it just felt kind of old and tired to me. Too much traditional UK think and the brown leather was too dark to really make that British Racing Green and Tan type statement. After 4 years with the stealth Miata, it's time to go back to the in your face type color that's not red.

You're exactly right. When the first photos of the poduction spec surfaced, a few of us merrily photoshopped our favorite colors. I tried to nail Montego Blue, which is my favorite color from the FD. I babbled quite a bit about how much I hoped the RX-8 came in Montego Blue. Jump forward to January, as I hunched over my laptop to pre-order my RX-8. I did not want a forest-green sportscar (that's exactly how it looked on the build site). I knew that all the colors were off, but had no idea what Nordic Green was. My wife liked green, but I loved the red. Ordered red, and I can't wait. Though, now what I'm hearing sounds like Nordic Green is very much like that Montego Blue...ahhh with the black & chaparral interior....too sweet. That's okay, though, because I do really love that Mica Red, and I'm sure it will be just as special as the nordic.

Talking

I'm also anxiously awaiting my Nordic Green with the chapperal interior. Only a few more days I hope......

Nordic Green just seemed to fit me. Not too flashy, not too boring. A little unusual, but not really whacked out.

First time in Green for me. I've been in the beige or maroons for the last 20 years, so this ought to be something new.

It has been frustrating however. Not many pictures, no real good idea of what it will really look like. And up until very recently, not many folks on this board talking about the green. Until a thread from a few days ago when someone said that "green may be the sleeper color". That would be cool.

I'm happy.....but I'll be happier in a few days when I actually see it!

I wanted green (colour of my current ride) but it is not offered in Canada. I would prefer the forest green from Acura, it's a little lighter then what the Nordic Green appears. During the day, my car looks black only under dark grey skies. At night, it definately looks black.

Currently leaning toward the titanium grey because of the black/tan interior looks amazing (from pictures) but that colour (grey) is everywhere this year and there are at least 2 other titanium 8's heading for Ottawa. I may go with the blue and install custom inserts but what colour would go with the blue and more to the point how much???

At first, I was going to get Titanium Gray. But then I noticed that everyone else was getting Gray, so I decided to get Nordic Green. I also prefer a darker color, because the seams and gaps are less noticible. Plus, I've always liked green cars.

Not much advertisement for the green imo.

I did a check of dealer inventories within 150 miles. There were only two nordic green cars on the lists. One of which was a auto transmission.

There were about 80 + cars on the inventories....

I am beginning to think that in 20 years, the Nordic Greens will be hot collectors items due to rarity.

Had to go with velocity red with all black interior. Red will always be the classic sports car color, and since no one knows how well the red inserts will wear, or whether or not they'll be really dated in 5 years - all black. Fun in the sun...

IMO, I think green on a sports car plays best on British cars, but I think the 8 will look nice in any color. Too bad they didn't offer a copper color, or a nice candy orange.

mmmm... candy orange.... <drools>

I think that burnt orange color they had on the Miata would have looked great, or, like boozehound said, a copper color. I also wish they had offered it in that deep blue that the 6 comes in- THAT is gorgeous. But I'm happy with my green.

I wanted that blue... but black has two tone... so if they HAD the blue, I'd be very pressed to make a decision :0

I couldn't hang w/nordic green I don't think. After four years and two black cars, trying to keep them clean....it would take a lot for me to consider a dark-colored car. Got to be some people that stay away for that reason.

This coming from someone who drives a pebble beige ride though (I prefer silver, couldn't care less what's common or not)
