Sometimes I even mow my lawn at 2am after getting back from the bar just to show how much pride I have in my lawn. Anyone complains and I just point to their crappy-*** yard in the morning... :D J/K I will only sound my horn if I am in a bad area or if I just didn't see the lights flash.

All this talk about the horn, you guy's do realise there are two horns....one on each side of the car? This fact will account for why it's so loud. Sounds ace, IMO.

In the owners manual (July 2003 Print 3) on page 3-4:
'To lock the doors press the LOCK button and the hazzard warning lights will flash once. To confirm that all doors have been locked, press the LOCK button again within 5 seconds. If they are closed and locked, the horn will sound and the hazard warning lights will flash once.'
I for one never press to confirm because the Horn is so loud, unless I want someone within earshot to KNOW I just set my alarm. I think it is great the RX-8 horn is loud, what good is a horn that can't be heard?

But to specifically answer 310guy's question:
One press is enough to lock the doors and set the alarm. You do not need to press it a second time and have the horn beep for the alarm to set.
The indication that the alarm is set is the hazards flashing once. If they don't flash then the alarm isn't set (usually because the trunk is open). You can press the lock button twice and have the horn beep but the alarm *not* set because the trunk is open, so the horn beep is only confirming that the _doors_ are closed and locked, it's not anything indicative of the alarm being set or not.
I only do the double press when I want to announce the fact that the car has an alarm, such as in a carpark where someone might be approaching the car as I'm leaving. Other than that I like the stealth no-honk method.

I personally don't like the horn, this is a unique car and deserves it's own horn sound (not the meep meep though), the fact that it sounds like a taurus, expedition or any other Ford is dissapointing. I'd like to get a FIAMM installed but not sure what to do with the alarm as I don't want the horn to go off if I do press the button twice.

Good grief, how often do you folks use the horn? For me, using the horn is such a rare occasion that I really don't care what it sounds like (as long as it isn't "meep meep").

Would be interesting to have air horns for a horn, kind of like a Mack Truck sound!!! And even air brake sounds!! That way when the horn sounds the car will jump 8 inches off the ground and let everyone within 1/2 mile know it has a horn. Course your hearing would go after a few blasts of that horn!!! Imagine having a horn like this inside a mall garage with lots of neat accoustics? Wow!!

Thanks G8rboy. But no thanks!! I was having fun was all. Nope! the original horns are enough for me. Now, some folks might want something louder. So guys if you want air horns than go for it!!

Mazda 6 base uses same engine as Mazda 3 s or wagon, the Mazda built 4-cylinder with 160 hp. Mazda 6s uses the Ford V6 block with Mazda heads and tuning. Run a search on the Mazdaspeed 6, it's powered by the same Mazda 2.3l 4-cylinder as the base 6 but turbocharged and direct injected to an estimated goal of 276 hp

Has anyone had their horn change pitch?
When I took the car from the dealer they had said it required two presses of the button, so it was habit by the time I read that part of the manual. I don't know about you, but I read what I thought were the important bits, and took another month to read the rest..., not as gripping as a Stephen King novel.
Anyway, I pressed the button twice the other day, and the pitch was higher and the volume lower. I did it three more times, same result. About 20 minutes later, I pressed it twice and the horn sounded normal. Weird $h!!.

The horn is so you can look cool as you turn from your car and arm it without having to glance back. But, a little chirp would have sufficed. My wife hates when I sound horn when arming the car and calls me a dork. Then I am no longer cool.

As long as it is loud enough to work properly, and doesn't sound ridiculous, I think adding an aftermarket horn is a bit over the top.
