My engine also has heavy duty coolant seals from Pineapple Racing and I run Evans waterless coolant so temps are typically a tad bit higher (read up on Evans) than what I saw using normal coolant. The FAL fans make a huge difference in how fast the engine cools down at low speeds/idle. I am planning to run the FAL fan controller with a switch soon, I just have not gotten around to installing it. At idle in this 100F+ weather I typically sit at 195-205F or so.
So you've seen your temp gauge move when you're driving hard? Yes I've heard Waterless coolant run a little hotter.

That's a pretty good drop! So let's say you got your temps up to 230F while ripping it, and you suddenly came to a stop. Can the FAL fans easily get the temps down to 195F in 100F weather?

What about the stock fans? Can you remember the idling temps in similar weather with the stock fans? What was the max temp you saw with the stock fans?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Just trying to figure out if spending the extra moola for the FALs are worth it.

Why did Mazda sell the RX-8 with an incompetent cooling system?

These screenshots were taken from the "New and potential owners start here" thread by RIWWP. It gave a a pretty straightforward opinion that the temp needle moving = new engine.

With that said, basically, everything we knew about this was wrong? The coolant seals don't blow at 220F and the temp needle moving doesn't mean it's too late?

IamFodi, exactly what I was thinking. All this time I thought exceeding 220F was bad. If the temp needle doesn't even move at 220F, and it's possible to cook a coolant seal, why did Mazda allow it to happen!

It's funny how I started this thread due to the very principles of the above statement. How the engine can die when sticking around 220F for too long and the stock gauge says "yep, all good. Keep driving", and now we find out that 220F is completely normal and harmless...

By the way, I can certainly vouch for this. There have been a few RX-8s over here that has hit the max of the stock temp gauge (due to fan failure) and years later, they're still running strong.
