ive been working on some home made cast aluminum strakes. Well not home made, i used a foundary in my school, but regardless. ITs a freaking LOOOONG process, and the grinding and polishing is taking forever. I think for one it has taken me maybe a total of 24 hrs of grinding down. I'll post some pics soon. It really sucks because I want to put the real strakes i bought on, but cant until I peferct the ones I made. So not worth it to make it out of metal unless you can do it fast and cheap. The 200$ is justified I say (i am sure mazda or whomever actually makes them pumps them out fast and easy, but regardless, its a pain in the *** to make one out of metal).

 

My friend works with titanium metal, maybe I can steal some from her and try to use that to make strakes:-d

 

News Flash at 10,

A Driver of a Titanium Colored Rx8 collided with a Semi/Deisel this afternoon just south of main street, the driver is safe, however the car was smashed to pieces, the only remaining parts that survived and could be Identified were the Titanium Strakes on the fender of the car.

Actual real Titanium Strakes, You folks make me laugh.

 

maybe make them out of gold or platinum. now that would be bling.

 

I hate those strakes.....yuck

 

i loooooove them! when a little extra cash appears i'll be sure to pick up a set. now installing them ... that's a whole 'nother issue, hehe.

 

holy crap.. you know how hard it is to work with Titanium?

its worse than steel and Aluminum.. Especially in a milling machine as it grabs and pulls the bit. and grinding and buffing.. good luck...

Just get some nice and relatively soft 6061-T6 Al and use that.. you can then anodize it any color you want or plate it if you really are up for the bling bling.

 

In the DIY section there are instructions for making them out of black plastic. If you want black, go that route. Save some money.
