Question When to Shifft

Hello,

I just recently purchased a new 2004 Rx8 with the 6spd transmission, and I was wondering when do most people shift from gear to gear? Any help would be appreciated. This is my first 6spd car.

It's not the engine you need to worry about, it's the tranny. Just remember, a red line a day keeps the carbon away.

look in your owners manual it gives you the "optimal" (as Mazda sees it) shift points...

there is no power under 3000, so I shift at 4000, so when you up shift it will fall just above 3000 rpm. I down shift around the same, unless it is stop and go traffic of course....

I started by using the shift points recommended in the manual. Once I got comfortable with it, I started pushing things and learning how to rev match at higher revs. Practice practice practice.

I bought this car without knowing how to drive stick, and it was my first car haha. You really just need to feel it, to be honest. noone taught me how to drive it, i taught myself in a matter of hours. Just drive it around your block for a little, youll get it asap.

Shifting also depends on how you feel like driving.

I mean, you might save a little gas if you shift at lower RPMS like 3k or below, if you feel like speeding, hold out the RPMS until you get the beep at redline :P

The sky is the limit.

I shift every 4k~5k. Most people view 3k as the typical "time to shift", but with the 8 having higher gear ratios I don't think it hurts to shift a little over 4k.
