When to Shifft

Hello,

I just recently purchased a new 2004 Rx8 with the 6spd transmission, and I was wondering when do most people shift from gear to gear? Any help would be appreciated. This is my first 6spd car.

It's not the engine you need to worry about, it's the tranny. Just remember, a red line a day keeps the carbon away. ;)

look in your owners manual it gives you the "optimal" (as Mazda sees it) shift points...

there is no power under 3000, so I shift at 4000, so when you up shift it will fall just above 3000 rpm. I down shift around the same, unless it is stop and go traffic of course....

I started by using the shift points recommended in the manual. Once I got comfortable with it, I started pushing things and learning how to rev match at higher revs. Practice practice practice.

I bought this car without knowing how to drive stick, and it was my first car haha. You really just need to feel it, to be honest. noone taught me how to drive it, i taught myself in a matter of hours. Just drive it around your block for a little, youll get it asap.

Shifting also depends on how you feel like driving.

I mean, you might save a little gas if you shift at lower RPMS like 3k or below, if you feel like speeding, hold out the RPMS until you get the beep at redline :P

The sky is the limit.

I shift between 3500-4000 rpm for normal driving. I try to rev up to 5000-6000 a couple times when I drive during a longer drive. I don't 'floor' the pedal usually either, I just let the engine gradually build up the RPMs rather than stressing the engine.

3000-4000 normal driving
a couple times hitting 6000-7000 WOT every day
once 9000 every day

damn i drive 5000rpm every shift , alot of 8000 shifts but dont redline

Grog 06-18-2010 08:48 PM

I shift every 4k~5k. Most people view 3k as the typical "time to shift", but with the 8 having higher gear ratios I don't think it hurts to shift a little over 4k.

hey i posted a question about this not to long ago. and i got all the answers you did. i followed the advice and the car seems to like it when you shift at around 3600 - 4000 rpms. and once every other day i'll redline it
