I say keep it. I just went through the same decision process and a new car really made no sense to me. The cost of some upgrades/fix/maintenance will generally be lower than buying something new. The worst case scenario of needing a new engine is relatively cheap in comparison to a new car. Try to think in term of actual price to buy something instead of installments and it makes things alot easier. I would setup a 'car fund' bank account and throw couple a hundred bucks in there every month. If any unexpected things come up then take the money from there, no problems, then you build up some nice cash when you do buy something new.
Despite what CNN tells you, we are not out of the global recession and the next couple of years are going to be rough. So preserve cash and cut back on the 'American dream' credit spending that helped us all get into this mess.

I pay my credit card off every month, so I had nothing to do with the mess we're in. But I get what you're saying.
In the end, I think I have to decide do I really want to keep this car for a long time? dmorales and some others have hit it on the head - if I'm going to get rid of it, now is the time. Otherwise, I should just keep it for as long as I can reasonably afford to do so.
I think perhaps a cooling off period would be wise for me. I have decided I won't do anything for a couple months. If this is still a question for me then, perhaps I just really want a new car, wise financial decisions be damned! lol

Honestly I'm never one to tell someone what they should and shouldn't part with in their life. I can only influence them with my actions and choices...and my choice if it were me....
I'd drive it til the wheels fell off. . . then pull over and and push it til it grew new ones.
basically...I wouldn't let it go because of other people's speculation. If the car runs well and it passes compression tests I don't see a reason why you should let it go

Loco, if I may weigh in........
I am a female as well, and have had my car 3 years. The dealer knows I am not mechanically inclined as well, and I am now 10K miles behind on a spark plug change which should have been done at 30K when I paid almost 600.00 for my 30K service. When I mentioned something about it, they only said they hoped that if something went wrong Mazda wouldnt void my warranty, because I didnt have my car serviced correctly. Needless to say I looked at him square in the eye and said loudly........"In this economy,,,,,,,,and you are telling me you have not done YOUR job?" I say this only because on a trade in they still make money,,,,even on an 06.
The dealers are hurting seriously. Don't let them scare you.......If its not broken don't fix it.......and don't worry about resale. The others are right. You wont get a good trade in on anything you want with the tales of woe the 8 has had early on. Save your money and if the engine goes..have it replaced. Do you love you car? Thats the only question really that needs to be answered.

Thanks to this forum, I am able to present myself as at least more informed than most, and I think he doesn't use a lot of his BS on me because of that. I'm always wary, but thankfully since I've had few problems, they have not had much opportunity to try to take advantage of me.
Do I still love the car? Well, I smiled pretty big driving in to work this morning. I'd been off for a week and hadn't driven it much, so it was nice to "re-acquaint" myself with the car. Yeah, I love it. But haven't any of you had new car fever? Haven't you ever experienced that itch to get into something different? Couple that with some doubts as to future reliability, and you get the position I have been in.
I will say this: all of your thoughts and feedback has been so helpful. When I started this thread, I was pretty close to getting rid of the car. Now, I have convinced myself to wait and see how I feel in a couple months. I think that's a step in the right direction. So, thank you all for talking me through the possibilities!

I've had new car fever before but I try to look at it from a dollars and sense standpoint.
I really liked my Mazda 6 and I planned on keeping it at least another 4 to 5 years but it reached a point of costing more than the car was worth.
At the time my 6 was worth 6.5 to 7K, I had dropped about 3k into the engine troubles.
Damn near a rebuild but there was more trouble coming and I knew it was time to let it go.
No warranty or anything left on it.
Nobody wants a car notes every month but you have to look at the total cost or you have to pony up and say “money be damned. I'm keeping it for whatever reason.”
BTW I did not know you were a lady so I hope I didn't offend with my talk of being a tease...

Thanks for being honest and logical. That is probably the right approach.
I also love not having a car payment. I think I'll start looking around. It's nice to not HAVE to do something - gives you a little more leverage when shopping.

Another way to look at it is: the sooner you sell it, the more money you can use as a down payment on your next car. It won't mean zero car payment, but you are that much closer to not having one.

Well guys, I didn't even last a month. I was going to give myself a cooling off period, but it didn't really happen.
I traded the 8 on a new black Miata. Got a really good deal on the car and they gave me $6500 for my 8. I was just ready for a change.
So, my RX-8 heads off to wholesale auction with 124,500 miles. It was a really great experience owning and driving the 8, and I enjoyed the car a lot. I was a little misty-eyed as I walked away from it for the last time. But we all have to move on at some point.
Thanks to all of you for giving me a lot of food for thought. Thanks to everyone here for the invaluable service they provide all RX-8 owners. This forum has been a huge help to me over the last six years. Don't know what I would've done without you!
